If you cancel 7-8 days before arrival, what happens to the points? Are they gone? Placed in holding?

Sorry should add use year is June, trip is late next week!

From the member website:
Any time you change or cancel a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation 30 days to one day before your scheduled arrival date, the Vacation Points used for that reservation are put into a Holding Account.

What you need to know about using Holding Account Vacation Points:

You can use these Vacation Points for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as you book the reservation 60 or less days before the new check-in date.

These Vacation Points can be used for an exchange during your current Use Year in two ways:
For The Disney Collection (except Disneyland® Resort hotels in California), Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection if you're making the reservation more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days away.
For Disneyland Resort hotels in California and the World Passport Collection as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.
These Vacation Points must be used to complete travel by the end of the Use Year or they will expire.

Sounds like it is so inexpensive..I called and they said for 4 people traveling it is something like $52 or so for all 4 for 200 points...Of course, cancellation would be for a "covered" reason like illness of people traveling, illness of relative, etc.

Added protection in my mind..They said they "work" with Member Services on point value..I tried to "pin" them down and they said something like $5 per point..Well that I know is really really low, but on say 200 points which had to be cancelled, that is $1,000 reimbursement..That almost pays in most cases dues for the year at least, at a bare minimum.

Then to the best of my knowledge, if you cancel anywhere between 30 days and 1 day before arrival, points are put in holding account..Reservation cannot be made before 2 months of arrival and holding points must be used before current use year expires.

I would think $52 is pretty nominal outlay for unexpected illnesses or covered reasons for family members...

If in the above example you have insurance for 200 points, and you couldn't use the points for the remainder of the use yr in the holding yr, you would get $1000 reimbursement...I stand corrected..You couldn't get the $1000 reimbursement and use the points for the remainder of the use yr..
Either or as they said.

I guess again $52 is a nominal charge if a trip had to be cancelled for a covered reason and you determined that you could not use the points in the use yr...

While the charge is nominal, so is the protection and reimbursement. It does have to be for covered reasons that were not in place prior to when you took the insurance. The reimbursement was still at $5 per point last I heard. Assuming one choses a favorable UY, you're really only buying insurance for 30 days as anything 31 days or earlier would have little risk from a DVC standpoint. I don't do insurance for timeshare stays including exchanges or for cruises as a rule. But one's personal situation might dictate the risk involved for a given trip and group and thus the reasonableness of said insurance. Just remember it's cheap for a reason.

I can't speak for others, but the reasone we don't do the trip insurance is the limited "acceptable" reasons. It is pretty much death, serious sickness, or natural disaster/weather. For us, we have had 2 trips cancelled in the last 20 years... both related to business/work, which is not covered.

Lucky. We have had 2 trips changed this year due to DH's job (gotta love the Army). Just discovered that we are going to have to change our July 4th trip and we are how many days out? :headache:

A "covered reason" from Travelguard Gold Plan Trip Insurance is having to cancel a trip for a work related reason..Another words, if you are expected to take a trip and your employer requires you to work during that time, that is a "covered reason"...In their plan, also if you have been working full time for more than 1 yr and you get laid off from your position, that is also a "covered reason". In both cases, you would need to submit documentation from employer for reimbursement!:goodvibes:goodvibes

We are using Travelguard for our upcoming trip for that very reason!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Is the "gold plan" the DVC insurance plan? We had a problem with Travel Guard a few years ago when we bought a policy direct. Turned out that they didn't cover points! :scared1:

:earsboy: Bill

When we travel, we purchase the Gold Plan Travelguard policy for airline, tickets, dining plan...all other up front costs which would carry a clause for cancellation for work...

Then we also purchase a separate very inexpensive policy to cover the points through DVC exclusively for the points...If in the event of a cancellation, Travelguard separate policy for points reimburses at $5 per point..I also figure that $5 per point is better than $0 per point! I always say at least my maintenance fee annually will be covered if we miss a trip!

Good Luck with insurance..Its complicated and you must do research and ask ALOT OF QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Hmmm.... interesting. MY only problem may be I am my employer :)

Well jerseygal, you have me intrigued. I went and checked out Travelguard and I am impressed... I was wondering if there was a place to look at this other policy that reimburses for DVC points. Do I just have to call them for that or do you know what that runs? My hotel & crusie are booked on points, so bulk of the trip is points, but with them offering to reimburse for work reasons, this makes this much better for us than the company Disney recommends.

Papamouse1, how did you find this creaky old thread from 2008? Whatever is in the thread before you posted may not exist anymore.

Wow, I just did a quote on their site. That's an expensive policy. I've decided to stick with the policy available through the member web site. No, it doesn't cover every cancellation reason, but it's enough coverage for the things that would be most likely to occur for us. I also like that it's one premium to cover the entire use year, and not a fee for each trip anymore.

I am not sure either, but obviously jerseygal had some to say about it now... responded to the thread as well :)

However, that may be why I don't see any coverage for points :thumbsup2
