Hi girls I was just wondering if any of you had been shopping for or even bought your dress when you knew you still had quite a bit of weight you wanted to lose before the wedding? Since being with Daniel I put on a lot of weight (just over 4 stone!!) I have lost nearly 2 of them since just before xmas but I know im still a long way from where I want to be. I am pretty confident I will be able to lose it before the wedding but I really didnt want to even start looking til I had lost at least another stone. I dont think I will like the look of any dress on me how I am at the moment. If I did find one I liked what would I do about the size and would I be able to come back for alterations at a later date? I am getting married in september and was planning on starting to look around the end of april but a bridal store near me is having an 80% sale next weekend and I think this could be well worth a look.
Any experiences of this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

Hi Jodie,

Are you getting married this September? Just to let you know my dress is taking 8 months to make. Not meaning to worry you if you intend to buy off peg it wont be a problem. I'm having the oppisite problem to you my shape is changing and I'm putting a little bit of weight on! I'm trying to diet but it is not happening. I would say start looking it doesn't hurt :)

i have my dress already and am planning on losing weigh, i have a corset back on my dress so its easy to adjust and the rest will be just alterations hopefully

I would definitely go to the sale. They'll size you for how you are now, but if you lose more weight, you can have the dress altered.

It's usually recommended that you order your dress nine to twelve months prior. I ordered my dress last month, and my wedding is in September. Most dresses come in around four to six months, and then there are a couple fittings before the wedding.

Go for it!

It can easily take up to six months (from my experience here in Canada/US) for a wedding dress to come in, which would put that at August right now, so I wouldn't leave it much longer.

Also from experience, I lost 40 lbs from when I got my dress until a couple months before my wedding. The alterations due to weight loss (not counting hem, bustle, etc) were $150 and very easy, done a month before the wedding. So I would definitely go ahead with the sale (and shopping in general).

Also, the advice given to me by a lady at a bridal store: buy the dress to fit you now. She said that if you don't lose all the weight, you don't need the stress of knowing that your dress won't fit (much harder to size up a dress) on top of all the stress of wedding planning. If you lose weight, that's just an added bonus. I don't know exactly how true that is, but weight loss is finicky (in amount and sometimes in how it shows on you) and I don't think I'd have enjoyed being worried about my dress being too small.

Good luck!

I'd say go for it!
If you see something you love in your current size they most of the time will be able to alter it. Just keep an eye on the style, some styles are harder to alter than other depending on the beading style and cut style.
Just as everyone says, ordering a brand new dress usually takes months (6 months average, could be less or more depending on company).
It doesn't hurt to look now, plus it'll give you an idea on the styles that fits you well even if you decide not to get one.

Alteration takes a bit of time too... unless you are getting your dress altered by the store you'll need to find a bridal seamstress. Depending on where you live bridal seamstress could be rare (it is where I live... :) ). So you are stuck with their time requirement. Ours wants at least 6 weeks to do any bridal alteration... doesn't matter what alteration she has to do. So keep that in mind also...

Good luck on the dress search and the weight loss!!!

I ordered my dress last month for the size I am now. I am about 12lbs heavier than I usually am (well, I'm about 4 stone heavier than I want to be but I'm being realistic) and I know I can lose that when I put my mind to it. The dress looked fantastic and, similar to orangetiggs, it has a corset back that will adjust.

The bridal shop are charging a flat rate for alterations regardless of the number I need doing which was an added bonus.

Corset back dresses are fantastic for taking the pounds off, so if you look at that type of style and like it now you will love it if you do lose the weight you want.

Good luck, happy hunting and GO FOR IT!!

Has anyone seen the show Bulging Brides on WE? I think they could have picked a better name but it is all about training to fit into dresses that were bought too small!
