Question about Budgies and Cages

A big question going out to other budgie owners! I'm kinda at a loss right now so I'm hoping for some help!

We just got our first budgie a few days ago! I did a lot of research beforehand, but it turns out today she had some poop stuck to her vent. I got concerned and went ahead and made a vet appointment for the morning just to be safe and I figured I wanted to do that anyway since I want someone to teach me HOW to clip nails and wings.

We have a special carrier for her and everything with a perch and her cage can't really be moved to the vet office since it's bigger... so my question is, how do we get her out of the cage?! She's a bin-o-budgies bird since we have no budgie breeders in the area and she's just getting used to my hand being in the cage and presenting her with a small perch to step up on (She's not done it yet but she's not scared of it either! :cheer2: ) so I'm scared if I just reach in and grab her it will completely traumatize any chance of a relationship with her!

Any suggestions would be appreciated, the appointment is tomorrow morning at 9:15

Thanks!

I could scream. I'd have delivered two of them to you...with cage, gravel stuff, food, toys, perches, and a bunch of food. We're so sick of ours.

But that's not your question. :) We let ours out to fly around daily. If you open the cage door, eventually, they'll fly out. It'll take a while if they're new - they are still getting used to new surroundings. But sooner or later, out they'll come.

They generally just go back to the cage when they're ready...mine actually like the cage and sit in there most of the day, even though the door is open.

However, when they're out, they'll hit the floor at some point if you chase them around. Then just throw a towel over them and GENTLY pick them up. That's how I do it when I have to catch them.

There might be a better way.

GOOD LUCK!

It might be too late for this answer, but I've owned lots of birds throughout my life, and my advice is to just grab the little sucker. (Gently, of course) Trust me, he might be somewhat irritated and offended (or not, sometimes they don't get annoyed...), but he will get over it soon enough. I've not known my birds to hold grudges for long. A treat or new toy might help smooth things over between you two also ;) . Also, you might get bitten, so be prepared for that too.
I tried the letting the bird out of the cage tactic before, and the bird always took forever to get out, and then once out, it took forever to catch the bird, so the bird was even more traumatized than I intended. Just grabbing him makes it all go over more quickly.
Good luck!

PS I really like the phrase "bin-of-budgies bird" :rotfl: Your budgie is adorable!

I learned this technique for picking up a bird who is not yet tame from our veterinarian. He takes a small washcloth, drops it over the bird which is still in the cage, then gently picks up the bird. Be sure to hold the bird around the back with the wings close to the body so you do not injure the wings. The bird will not like this too much but trust me, birds have short memories! Good luck!

Thanks to everyone! :) We ended up having to cancel the appointment and make one for next Monday with an ACTUAL avian vet since I found out last night that the vet I was going to take her to was not an avian vet like she claimed! :(

She's starting to trust me more, but now I'm getting kinda frustrated putting Kale in her cage because she's not eating it. Heck, she's not eating anything but her seeds and I've tried several different kinds of veggies. Frustrating!

Anytime you want two more birds, please let me know.

Enjoy yours, though! :)
