My 15 month old grandson's gum is black and blue where his first molar is suppose to come in. It is a little swollen also.

I've raised 4 kids and never remember seeing this with mine.

Has anyone ever seen this or know what it is?

I don't remember black and blue spots with my kids, but I definitely remember swelling. A black and blue makes sense though if the tooth is pushing through. Does it seem to be terribly uncomfortable for him? Keep an eye on it.

Well, my daughter's didn't turn black and blue that I noticed, but when her molars came in there was some blood involved. Some of it dried and stayed on the tooth till we brushed it. But I'm guessing that since she bled it was probably very sore so I could imagine there being a bruise involved too.

Here's another thought. Has he been chewing or gumming on something the help relieve his discomfort? Maybe that is causeing the trouble.

That happened w/ my younger DS. Each of his molars, he'd get a big black spot/bruise on his gum before they came through. Totally freaked me out!

But, his dr assured me it's normal & nothing to be worried about.
