Typically how long does the regular formulation of adderall last for your child? I know it's different for each child, but just trying to get an idea. Do they get through an entire school day, or is a second dose required?

I'm asking because my son takes the extended release formulation and I just feel like it lasts *too long*. So he has a dr. appt. tomorrow and I might discuss just switching him to the regular version of it so that he will be able to fall asleep earlier and possibly eat more for dinner.

Thanks :)

My DS10 takes 20mg of Adderall XR at about 7:00am each morning and then around 2:45pm he takes a regular 5mg to get through homework.

I was finding that the XR that he takes is wearing off before we get to homework and that time of the day was a nightmare. Now he's a totally different boy. He has no problem with going to bed for 9:00pm. Sometimes he may just lay there for about 20 or 30 minutes, but he is usually always asleep by 9:30pm.

Good luck. It's really hard finding the formula that works for them.

My DD 9 takes 10 mg regular Adderall about 7:30 in the morning and then takes another 10 mg at 1:00. I am thinking about asking if I can cut the afternoon pill in half and hopefully that will still allow her to get through the rest of her school day and homework time with focus yet still eat a decent dinner. She has very little appetite on the adderall and has lost a couple pounds since starting.

DD8 is petite for her age - about 46 pounds. She takes 5 mg of regular adderall at 8:30 am. She isn't typically hungry at lunchtime but by the end of the school day at 4 pm she's ready to eat. From what we've observed, her morning dosage wears off around 3 pm, give or take.

I remember that was one of the things her doctor asked me about to determine correct dosage. The goal was to get it just right to wear off around the end of the school day. If I understood it correctly... if the effects had worn off at lunchtime then he'd have tried a higher dosage in the morning before adding a second pill for later in the day. We don't feel the need to medicate after school hours/weekends but I know several kids near her age taking 10 mg who get a second dose that holds them until bedtime.
