Yes, I am going to see a lawyer, just NOT the one who handled my divorce.

My question is, if a QDRO regarding a pension has been filed with an employer, which in this case is a municipal government, should the court ordered payments from the pension start automatically once that employee retires? My ex has been retired for several years and I have yet to see a dime of the court ordered payments. I'm not sure if there is something I should have done that I did not.

Yes, they should have. In the QDRO there should be the name and address of the pension coordinator/trustee/benefits manager. I would contact them right away.

I would also have a lawyer familiar with QDROs look at your order. It may depend on how it was written. It could be based on your former spouse's taking retirement (shared interest) or your actuarial facts (separate interest). Calling the plan administrator may give you the answer, but their response times can be long, especially for a government pension.
