This show is in my town for the month of July. I've heard it was hilarious, and planned to take my DDs (ages 13 and 16). Before I bought tickets, I mentioned it to my SIL, who said that it was HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE. And she's no prude! She said that she can't remember specifics, because she saw it so long ago, but just remembers that it was "really pretty dirty".

I read a review online, and the reviewer recommended the show for kids ages 10 and up.

So, who has seen it, and who can tell me about it? R-rated? PG-13? lol! I need some words of wisdom before buying tickets........

It isn't that dirty. There is only one song that is mildly inappropriate which is "My Unfortunate Erection".

If you are worried about it I would suggest listening to the original broadway cast album.

There are some joke about the "adults" involved with the bee. The word giver has been on a 5 year stint for an unknown reason all the say is he is in a better place now and has returned and the other "adult" is on court mandated community service.

The wikipedia page is a spoiler filled play by play if you want to know exactly what goes on.

There are some things that some parents may find inappropriate like one of the girls is the daughter of two men.

LOL --- I think my DDs can deal with that "unfortunate" song! Thanks for the info. We have no problem with the two dads situation, either. I was worried it was more along the lines of Avenue Q! :scared:

My son's drama club did Spelling Bee last fall. Tweens and teens were in it. They did a few tweaks , I think for language, but otherwise let it go and it was a funny show.

You may not be able to go by me though. Last winter, We took the boys to Ave Q (they were 12 and 14) . They loved it!!!! We still sing the internet is for porn!
(I had seen it on Broadway years ago and knew exactly what it was)

Putnam is definitely tamer than Avenue Q. There aren't any sex scenes or anything like that. There is so good audience participation fun.

I think it is fine for pre-teens and teens.

We went to see this two summers ago when the boys were 13 and 11 and we all found it very entertaining and funny. Nothing cringe-worthy. They loved it and in fact every now and then will still quote something from it and I will be like "I can't believe you remember that" and we all get a good laugh. Great show!

Hysterical show!! Your kids (and mine loved it) will LOVE IT!!!

The unfortunate song had me nearly falling out of my chair laughing when I saw it on Broadway. :rotfl2: :rotfl:

It's not that it's a raunchy song, it's just really funny. Poor Chip got a little distracted... :lmao:

13 and 16 is totally fine for Spelling Bee. I remember when I saw it thinking that it would actually be a great show for high schools to do.

It's a really fun show, definitely see it if you can!

I think in some places, the Putnam County Spelling Bee had some special "Parent/Teacher" nights where it was quite a bit raunchier. Maybe that is what your SIL saw.

This is the play that our high school is doing this year. The kids are very excited about it, but I have never seen it. Looking forward to watching it.
