Purchasing park tickets

I posted this on another thread but I'm curious. Last visit we booked a package and got a voucher for the resort stay and tickets. Upon arrival at POR we received one card which was our ticket, room key and charging priveleges. We are planning a trip in December. How does this work if we make the room ressie to get the AAA discount and purchase tickets separately from another vendor? Will we then have one room key and a separate ticket? And are the tickets they send you paper or plastic? I'm a little confused at this. We only ever booked packages for disney and this would be our first time doing it this way. Then again, maybe booking through AAA would be a better way. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon

We did this last August, we booked our room seperately to get the AAA discount. I ordered tickets through Ticketmainia. When we arrived at the hotel, they directed us to the Concierge desk. There they were able to remake our room key with the tickets on them. So we had one key for the room, the parks, and to charge with. It worked great!

We have never had our tickets combined with our room key unless we bought the package. We were told this could not be done since we bought the tickets outside of Disney. I wonder why they do it for some but not others. Is it because of the concierge level?

The policy on this has changed several times over the years. First they could, then they couldn't, now they can again.

Also, not every hotel check-in CM actually KNOWS HOW to code an existing pass onto a room key, and some don't even know that it's possible, so if you get an answer you don't like, ask for a supervisor to confirm it.

And lastly, all of the WDW hotels operate autonomously; each hotel's general manager has a wide lattitude to establish individual policies for the hotel, so things can work a little different from one hotel to another.

Booked seperately also. Our park hopper passes were like plastic credit cards we swiped at entrance to park. Easy as could be. Keep room key and passes away from electrical devices. My brothers room card and park pass got demagnetized and therefore unusable from being to close to his digital camera lol. Luckily WDW had seen it before and were nice enough to replace both.
