We did a “downgrade renewal” from Platinum to Gold last year within the 60 days before our APs expired. Did not have to wait until we were in the 30 days after expiration.

Our "downgrade renewal" was done over the main WDW Web site. Now, while this worked for US, a good 2 years ago?
Given how often the main WDW Web site FAILS? I would consider phoning Member Services.
