We are military, have stayed at SOG for years, should we buy into DVC? We will continue to go to WDW at least every other year. We cruise on DCL on the years we don't go to the park but would not use our points for it, not a good use.

any thoughts?

thanks!

The only reason to buy is to save money or to take advantage of a larger room or different resort.

You need to look at the cost of what you spend on your room now and what it would cost to buy resale including the cost of dues for the length of ownership.

I agree. If you need more room(s), a full kitchen, extra bathrooms, in-room laundry and want to stay at different resorts it may be worth looking into. If you only need a studio maybe not so much. Even buying resale there is a large cash outlay and if you have to finance that will eat into your bottom line. Don't forget annual dues.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Check out the "Is DVC worth it thread". It had a lot of good perspectives and info. Good luck with your decision!

If you are military until retirement, you can still book Shade of Green after retirement. If you are military until you quit, Shades of Green won't be available to you after you leave the service unless they are offering a special deal for specific veteran groups.

Think long and hard about what would happen to your points should you be on the receiving end of a short notice deployment! Look closely at cancellation and hold rules.

If you do your DVC resort stay about the same time of year every year, you can select a use year which will allow you to get your points back and bank them (assuming you have more than 30 days notice to cancel) - but if you cancel within 30 days your points go into a holding account.

This is the primary reason we're still holding off pulling the trigger on a DVC purchase (former USN - but I still travel a lot for business, and scheduling a vacation 11 months out to take advantage of the home-resort reservation period is a tough one)

I just retired from the military and am a DVC owner. I bought in 2009 after my last deployment, but hopefully can speak to the good and bad. I love DVC, but there are some challenges with the time constraints. You can book your home resort 11 months out and 7 months out for other resorts. In my career there is no way, I could book that far out with certainty. Most of my trips have all been short notice and luckily was able to get rooms, but had to split stay, or stay at SSR. My vacations also haven't been during times when the rooms are completely booked like the holidays. I also havent been able to stay at my home resort because it is booked due to my late booking (totally understand this is on me).
Also, there are cancellation rules and this could potentially cause you to lose points if not able to follow due to short-fused deployment or change of schedule.
I actually had to cut a trip short by two days while at WDW due to last minute operational change in my ship's schedule. It was not fun!!!

I recommend reading up on the other post as suggested earlier, especially the point rules with booking, cancellations, banking, and borowing. It really isn't complicated once you know them. With all of that said, I love DVC and have enjoyed it tremendously. Luckily we are easy going and love all of the resorts. Last minute bookings almost always leave you at SSR and we do not mind at all!

Hope this helps a bit. If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know.
