Purchase Gift Card Onboard (i.e. cash out refundable onboard credit)

Will DCL let you purchase a Disney Gift Card on-board using money in your on-ship account? I know I have seen gift cards in the gift shops on the ships, just wondering what the policy is and has anyone done this?

Also, I am not planning on attempting this with OBB or agent-provided credits (I doubt that would work) but I am pre-loading money onto my account ahead of time (I know Disney considers that to be refundable on-ship credit) and wondering if I can use that money to buy a gift card in the gift shop onboard.

Thanks!

Yes, we have done this...the only caveat is that you can only purchase gift cards in given increments that they offer gift cards in...i.e. if you have a shipboard credit of $109.99, you will be able to purchase $100 in gift cards; if your shipboard credit was say $145.36, I think you could buy $125 in gift cards, as I don't believe they offer $10 increments. So you'll need to find SOMETHING to buy to suck up the difference and allow any small overage to go to the credit card you have attached to your cabin.

I had no idea you could do this! Although I have never been anywhere near close to having any obc leftover, this is really good to know! :)

What happens at the end if you still have on board credit? Do you just loose it?

Yes you would lose any obc that you did not use.

Sort of. It depends on where the OBC came from. OBC from doing an onboard booking is non-refundable, so if there is any left, you lose it. OBC from TAs or monies that people (or yourself) have put on your onboard account will be refunded.

Charges to your onboard account are paid first by any non-refundable OBC you have, then any refundable OBC, lastly your credit card is charged.

I pre-load my account beforehand with my Disney Visa. Whatever I don't use is just refunded to the card.

I'm pre-loading with Gift cards, but instead of keeping all my $10 and $25 gift cards and then trying to figure out which one the credit was refunded to, it would be much easier to just "purchase" a new gift card with the remaining on-board balance.

Are you sure they use up non-refundable OBC first?

Does anyone know what the available gift card denominations are on-board? Someone mentioned you have to buy them in certain increments, does that mean they are pre-labeled as $25, $50, etc...or just that it has to be a multiple of say $25

Any limits on how much you can put on a Gift Card?

Did you know you can transfer balances from one Disney gift card to another? The site is linked below. Disney finally got wise to people using multiple small denomination gift cards to pay for trips. They finally created a way for customers to merge multiple gift cards so they would not have to pay with as many cards. I wish they had had this option the last time I used gift cards.

So, if you have not already loaded your account, take the smaller amount gift cards and merge them so you do not have as many. Then, if you do have a refund, there are less cards for the refund to go to. If they are split, you can then just transfer to one or two cards so you still would not have as many cards.
