Pump & Dump or Pump & Fly??

I went on a work trip for four days when my baby was 6 months old. I pumped on my normal work pumping schedule. I also pumped in the morning and two sessions in the evening. I stored the milk in lansinoh bags and had about 120 ounces when I flew home. I wasn't throwing that out!

I split my milk between checked and carry on. I carried it on the plane in a soft side cooler. When I went through security I told them I had liquids in excess of 3 ounces and that it was breastmilk. They swabbed the bags for explosives and sent me on my way. I carried several ziplock gallon size bags with me. I stopped at McDonalds on the other side of security and had them fill them up with ice. I stressed more about security but it was easy. If you use ice packs they have to be frozen solid or TSA could throw them out. I used ice packs in the cooler I checked.

Don't let a trip have you wean if you're not ready!!

We will be there over the 4th of July week. I am thinking I am just going to pump and dumpin the parks so I don't have to keep up with the milk, keeping it cool, worrying about storing it, etc. I was a surrogate so now I donate to a preemie bank but am unable to donate the milk I pump while away from home (it has to do with bank approved freezer temps, etc). But I am going to play it by ear and what I do pump at the condo I will probably just donate through eats on feets.

Hi!!I know this is about a month overdue, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone for your suggestions and support. We had a fabulous trip in September with just our son, and I didn't have to wean our daughter :-)

I took all of your advice, and pumping & flying was super easy. The only milk I had to dump was two pumping sessions worth that I did at Old Key West on our arrival day prior to switching hotels to the Poly.

I pumped in the morning before everyone woke up, once during the day when our son napped, and once before bed. I stored the milk in our room fridge, and I carried all of the milk home in a small, soft-sided cooler and it was a breeze. I brought a bunch of ziplock bags from home and filled them with ice from the resort ice machine so the milk in the soft sided cooler would stay cold. We got on Magical Express around 11, and by the time we got home, around 4:30, everything in the cooler was still cold, and the ice was still frozen. Worked like a dream. Security at MCO did not seem fazed at all. It took an extra 2 minutes for them to check the cooler.

Thanks again for all of the support. I'm so happy I didn't wean my daughter before I was ready just bc of the trip :-)

I had to travel a few times for work while breastfeeding. It's not a big deal at all. I was lucky to have a freezer in the hotel, so no milk was even wasted. Those mini fridges at disney definitely don't "freeze". Don't let it sway you towards weaning if you aren't ready. You can carry on as much milk as you want. However, if you are flying Southwest, I'd say check the milk in an insulated bag with ice or ice packs. So much easier than dealing with TSA. Just make sure the cooler is waterproof! Some insulated bags aren't made to hold melted ice and will leak all over your suitcase. I used a medela insulated bag with an ice pack. Have fun!
