Hello All. I couldn't stand not having a trip planned so....
I secretly reserved one for our family
me, DH, DS (10), DS (8) and DD (6).
It will mean pulling the kids out of school right before winter break (so we don't hit highest level of December crowds).

Do you have strategies for your kids making up school work when pulling them out? Does your child's school frown upon pulling kids out for a trip?

Our school is strict but it can be done. Do you have any stories about making up school work with little stress?? (asking for work before go away?, do work during?)
thanks for your input.

This tends to be a very polarizing topic on the boards.

Send a note to the teacher before your trip. Every teacher is different. Some will be happy to prepare something in advance. Others will not. It is not their responsibility to create planned absence packets.

My advice, since it sounds like you'll have winter break right after the vacation, is to have one of their friends collect the work and bring it to your kids once you return. Then you'll have the break to catch up.

While in Disney, make it educational. Spend a lot of time in Epcot's world showcase, the land and living seas. Do the Wilderness Explorers in Animal Kingdom.

The other thing I would suggest is for each child to write a letter to their teacher when they return. It should thank the teacher for putting together the work that they missed and also go through everything they learned while on the trip.

Good luck!

Absolutely not allowed where we live. A zero is given for every missed assignment, quiz and test and they can't be made up. :(

It has never been a problem for us. We inform the teachers ahead of time, and they give us whatever work they can.

When we come back, they just give a packet of the work they missed.

We will always pull them out - it's not worth it for us to vacation during peak times.

We did this a couple years ago, my son was in third grade, he attends an accelerated learning enrichment school. The teacher was all for it, said she felt travel was very educational...about a week or so before we left, gave him a packet of homework to do while gone. He came home, with the packet, and turned it back in, complete and 100% the next morning. She said, wow, that was fast! He just replied, I didn't want to be doing homework on vacation...

We're doing it again in 34 days.

I wouldn't worry about it.
