There is one area in Old San Juan to avoid, it's called La Perla and is usually well marked on maps. It's on the northern part of the city and is a definite no-go. The rest of the city is pretty safe, especially during daylight.
A couple of places in San Juan that are musts! First is Chocobar Cortes - a great restaurant in Old San Juan that incorporates chocolate into every dish. Amazing.
Second is Parque Las Palomas (Pigeon Park) in the southwest corner of Old San Juan. You can purchase a bag of feed from a nearby seller and feed literally hundreds of pigeons in the park which gather there every day. They will perch on you, go nuts for the feed (and yes, sometime poo on you...). It's hilarious and fun, bring hand sanitizer.
Last is our favorite place to have dinner, Casita Miramar. It's in the Miramar district of San Juan, about 10 minutes via taxi from Old San Juan and the food there is local and authentic. Amazing place. Try the local fried cheese, the local, fresh sangrias and whatever the waiter recommends.
Have a great time! My family and I spend several days in San Juan every year and love it.
