I’ve never had this happen before, but my watermelon just exploded and spewed guts and liquid all over my kitchen. It was about a week old and I kept on thinking I should cut it. Too late! It’s literally all over my kitchen and I need to mop and clean up at 11:30 at night. Fun times.

I once had that with a can of diet coke at work.

At work we used to have a communal fridge. If there were leftover snacks or drinks after a meeting, it was placed in the fridge for everyone to eat and drink.
One person had placed a can of diet coke in the freezer and then back in the fridge. Diet coke doesn't like that.

The can exploded. Of course I was wearing a white dress that day. I was dripping with diet coke, including my hair. The entire kitchen had to be cleaned, including the ceiling.
And because the ceiling was over 6 ft high, our regular cleaning crew wasn't allowed to do it.

As a result that outside cleaners had to be brought in, and it took a long time for it was decided which department had to pay for it 😜

Had that happen once. What a mess. I forget how long the watermelon sat on the kitchen island till it exploded. But the incident made me paranoid, and every day one goes uncut I sweat it out, wondering if it will make it through the night!

I had that happen once. Thankfully before I had the kitchen redone. What a horrible sticky mess to deal with. Fun game thing is a couple days later it happened o my mother too. My brothers of course gave her a long scientific reason. I don’t think she cared

o_O New fear unlocked!

The worst think I ever did was a 2L bottle of rootbeer in my kitchen. Thankfully being diet, it was not sticky or anything, so that helped. That and a can of sparkling water in the car. It was in the floor, rolled around and hit something and started spewing water everywhere. However, being water it was pretty harmless.

I heard about this for the first time this year. But apparently it’s happening a lot since this summer has been so hot and that accelerates the fermentation process that makes the watermelon explode.

From what I understand, foam coming out of the melon is an early warning sign. That’s when you need to get it out of your house asap. At that point, they are unsafe to eat as well because they can contain toxic levels of bacteria like E. coli.

I knew I had a good reason not to like watermelon . . . 🤢

It happened to me also a few years ago......it was all new to me. Another time, it just started spraying the juice out......
Sounds possessed: like one of those exorcist-style horror movies. :scared1:

Wow...I read a ton of news and have not heard ANYTHING about this at all. I bet many others haven't either. Thanks for sharing.

squash/zucchini do as well

Oh no! I bought two spaghetti squash. TIP: Don't buy ones that seem very heavy for their size. I opened one up and found the seeds have sprouted inside. So now there are big thick, heavy sprouts taking up more room inside the center. While not dangerous to eat, they aren't good to eat, :P as the "spaghetti strings" have become thick and tasteless, and take a long time to cook.

I haven't gotten around to tossing the second one yet. Better do that today. :scared:

I love watermelon, sadly. Watermelon never let me down until this year.
the zucchini I know that did was huge, like almost the size of a newborn baby huge. It wasn't mine, but the person who it happened to alerted me because they had given me one of the same size the day before. I went ahead and cut mine up immediately.

My mom had a honeydew melon explode a few years ago. We had to repaint the ceiling in her kitchen. Way more stuff in that small melon than I would have guessed!
