PS2, GameCube,Xbox, etc... Which game system is best for younger children?

We got a gamecube with a Mario Party bundle for Christmas. another upside for us is that if you get a certain adapter, you can play gameboy games on it. We have only had gameboy up to now and have about 12 gameboy games (I think DS got 4 of them new for Christmas). I'd hate to have those gathering dust. Don't know how much the adapter costs though; it was sold out when we got the system.
