Hey everyone - I already have an AP but my friend does not. She (friend) is moving to SoCal on Monday to attend college; she will be staying with family out there. I am flying out on Wednesday and she is going to go to DLR with me on Wednesday/Thursday. We are trying to figure out how she can prove residency to get the SoCal AP with monthly payments since I will be coming out a lot and we will be going to DL frequently.

She will not start school until after I leave so she can't get an ID. She is staying with family so all the utilities/bills will not show her name. Can she get a CA DL on Tuesday? Will they give her one and can she get it that quick? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I wouldn't get a CA DL unless she knows she wants to live here after school. If you get a CA DL, your registration and insurance must also be CA, and it's much more expensive here than in almost any other state. You also have to retake the written portion of the test, they don't just switch out the old license for a CA one.

Does she have the same last name as the family she will be living with?

Yup, same last name but not same first name.

Like I said earlier, I would only get a CA license as a last resort UNLESS she plans to live here after college or year-round. It's really much more pricey and even if she took the test on Tuesday, passed, and got her picture taken, you don't get your license in the mail for another week - you just get a piece of paper that says you applied. She would have to take that paper plus her old state's license with her.

Does she have paperwork stating that she is enrolled at the CA school and starting this semester? That with her family's utility bills would likely be enough I'd imagine, especially if she's going in person to plead her case.

Your friend can get the 6 day pass. I'm not sure but I think the pass will allow her up to 45 days to use those 6 days of visits. Hopefully she can get her school ID by then. After she got her ID, she can go visit Disneyland and upgrade her 6 day pass to the AP. She just pays the difference in price. In the end, the AP would cost the same as if she bought it on the first day.

Sorry, I have to correct you. The passes expire 13 days after the first day of use, not 45. She could get a multi-day parkhopper (doesn't have to be a 6-day) and upgrade so long as she gets her school ID before those 13 days are up. If she gets the ID before the 13 days after first use, then yes, feb30th's suggestion of upgrading to an AP would work, but since she wants to take advantage of the payment plan, I'm not sure they can do it if she is upgrading from a multi-day. She might just have to pay the full difference up front, but I'm not 100% sure on how they do the payment plan when upgrading.

Instead of a drivers license, can she can get a regular ID card? I'm not sure how it would work, already having an out of state drivers license, but it would be cheaper. It works the same way as the license application, minus the driving part. They should give a temporary print out right there and then mail out the actual card later.

Thanks guys. The CA ID is an idea but I don't know if they would let you have a CA ID and an AZ DL. I'm thinking the enrollment letters and families bills will have to do. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know!

Although she may not want to get a CA DL, she could get a CA ID! It's just an ID card that shows your a resident.

Many California colleges & universities offer discounted passes to Disney. She should contact her student union to get more information. (This information comes from another website that deals with Disney).

Also, I would highly recommend she speak with her family's tax accountant prior to changing her residency. It can make a huge difference in tax liability. However, on the plus side she might be able to get in-state tuition. But it's not something to take lightly, just to get a discounted AP.

She can, and should, get a California ID card, which she can obviously have along with an Arizona DL, but it's not printed right away, it comes in the mail a week after you go to the DMV.

As somebody who has gone with many friends to get APs, I will tell you that never once have they actually asked for proof of SoCal residency.

Thanks for that info. Just for reference, did the people you went with get the SoCal AP and they did not ask for proof then? Also, was this somewhat recent? I am sure hoping so. I am thinking she'll just bring evidence she is an enrolled college student and some bills from her family which share the same last name. If all else fails we will have to pick a male attendant and let her bat some eyes or do whatever! lol

You can't hold state IDs or driver's licenses from two states. Not even a DL from one and an ID from another. The ID is ONLY for people who can't get or don't have a license so you can't get a CA ID while holding a license from another state. But the original poster never asked about that either, she was talking about the friend getting a school ID to use as identification to show residency I think, which would work, but not until she has it. I like the idea of using mail with the same last name and explaining she just moved here for school. Seems like it should work.

To clarify, you can only be a resident of one state, so you can only have legal identification as a resident of one state. But in thinking more, I think I'm wrong. You just can't have two DLs. Lots of students keep permanent residency in their home states, but still get DLs in their school states.

I'm pretty sure she can just walk up and say she lives in SoCal and that will be enough. That's what my GF did when she was in school here, I think they even looked at her Massachusetts ID and didn't say anything. It's not like getting a library card :littleangel:

You are wrong. I have a Florida DL and a California ID card. You can only have one DL. You can have as many state IDs as you'd like. I even used my FL DL to prove who I am when I asked for my CA ID.
