pros and cons of hysterectomy

The ice chomping is one of my problems also. It is so odd to find others with the same problems. It sure makes me feel better to know I am not so different.

I had the ice chewing symptom so severely that in those days, we never had any ice in our automatic ice maker. I'd eat it as fast as it made it. I'd jump up as soon as I'd hear the sound of more ice cubes dropping. And I'd get SO cold, I'd have to take a bath or shower, to warm up.

I really thought I just had some strange compulsion. I wish I had know back then, that this was something I couldn't help....I really beat myself up mentally, over my inability to control this.

If uterine cancer remains a concern of my dr. then it will have to be a total hyst. to prevent that. I'm hoping that's not the case ubt right now I feel terrible.

I agree that it was the best thing I ever did (had one when I was 35). The only thing I am unhappy with is the HRT. I have tried to cut down by myself and caused some physical problems. I am stuck with them!

Is there a reason that things need to be removed, or do you just need to stop the bleeding?

I had a balloon ablasion surgery done approx. 5 years ago and have never had another cycle. The lining is either burnt or frozen and there is nothing left to shed each month. I also was becoming anemic, and could do not do any physical activity (we're talking just walking around normally) for 2 or 3 days a month.

I had the ballon ablasion done 5 years ago, and it was great for the first couple of years, but my periods have returned, while they are not as heavy as they were before the surgery, they are still painful and heavy and last for more than a week at a time.

And I am SOOOOO glad I did!::yes:: ::yes:: I did keep one ovary though, the other had a non-cancerous cyst on it, plus I had a Fibroid Tumor, AND an old IUD still in there! I am still numb in the surgery area, but its getting better.:o I recovered in 3 weeks and went back to work--I was glad to!::yes::

having day surgery next Wed to take 3cysts off my left ovary - doc may need to do more (or not) once he gets in there
He also wants to do a DnC

we leave for Disney/Universal/IOA 4wks later so Im hoping for a quick recovery

I had a total hysterectomey back in 1990 and it saved my life. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and bothof my ovaries were the size of grapefruits when they were taken out.

The down side is that a very early menapause made me gain a great deal of weight.

The up side is I never had any other side effects like hot flashes etc.

Definately the best thing I ever did!:D

I had mine at 30 due to uterine cancer. Aside from the obvious benefit of taking care of that...NO MORE PERIODS!!!

The only con I can think of is that 10 years later I'm still going through menopause. I thought it went away eventually?

I went ahead and let the Dr. remove my ovaries because he said most times they wind up removing them eventually anyway. And because I had a greatly increased chance of ovarian cancer after that.

My recovery time was only about 3 weeks to get back to light work and probably 6 to feel totally normal again but everyone is different.

If you're problems are severe enough to affect your quality of life then think seriously about this and be sure to ask tons of questions about it of your Dr.
