I am attempting to get my driver's license renewed today. NJ has the 6 point system where you have to show all sorts of ID, one of them being proof of social security. My parents, for some reason, have my social security card. In the past, I have shown my health insurance card or paystub as proof. Well now, for security reasons, nothing seems to have my social on it. Not even my social security statement.

Any suggestions for something I may not be thinking of offhand???

Not sure what to tell you to do but had a similar experience as I do not have my original SS card, that was many years ago, and when trying to open a bank account, they would not do it unless I proved what my ss was. I had taken my SS number off my driver's license years ago when they suggested you do that to prevent identity theft.

Needless to say, I got a manager involved at the bank and was able to open the account, but what to do at the Registry...not sure. Can you get your parents to send your card or get the card from them somehow??? or can you go to a SS office and get a copy of your number verified by them..

Good luck!!!!

New York makes you show the SS card when you first apply for a license. I could not find my daughters for anything so we had to get a replacement card. What a hassle. To deleiver it to the house I had to put her name on the mailbox or they wouldn't deliver it to us.

Now for the idea. Do you work? Is there something in the payroll department that has your number on it? Not sure if that would be acceptable but payroll needs to have your number to issue checks and take deductions out.

I didn't show my SS card. I lost it long ago. You can use other documents. I think I showed, a bank statement, birth certificate, old drivers license, and my college diploma. I believe the diploma was a point or something.

My parents are on a cruise for a month, so I won't be able to get it from them in time. I actually have 12 points worth of documents to show. But everything only shows my last 4 digits of my social. Maybe they already have it in their system anyway and it won't be a big deal.

If that doesn't work, I guess I will head to the social security office tomorrow.

I have bad timing, I just realized I'll have to do this all over again next year when I get married.

Go onto the DMV website. You don't need to show proof of your SS or number according to them. Current Drivers License, birth certificate, and a bank statement all equals 6 points and you are covered.

How about tax forms? Might just be easier to go to a Social Security Office. While you're there find out what you need to do when you get married next year if you should change your name. This way you'll already have the information handy.

It's my understanding that you have to show the actual Social Security card in addition to the other things to get to the 6 points. I know NY is the same way as well. If you go to Social Security and request a new one, you usually have it within a week.

We just moved out of Jersey to PA. I don't think you have to have the soc sec in Jersey if you can show tax forms, etc. In PA, however they only take soc sec card. My husband didn't have his. It took at least 10 days to get it. Just warning you.

I just got my license renewed, I didn't have to show a SS card or number, just needed 6 points of ID. If that office is giving you a problem go to a different one.

Go to SS office and apply for a replacement card, tell them you need a verification letter for dmv which they will give you on the spot. They will accept that, if not ask for a supervisor. I drove around w/out a license for about a month because of NJ DMV. I lost my naturalization papers, (was born in Canada, adopted...), lost my ss card. I dont look for this stuff until I need it, The ss card was the easy one, the naturalization papers take 1 year to replace, had to go to National Archives in NYC to get a certified copy of the petition and they still wouldnt take it, was told Id have to wait for the replacement papers, drive a year with an expired license! Went to another DMV office, asked for a supervisor who called Trenton and got it approved. Its a whole new world we live in.

So it all turned out okay.
They didn't like my social security statement. January 2006 wasn't recent enough for them. They didn't like my paystub and employee ID card even though that counts.

They ended up using my old digital license, passport, atm card and my car insurance card.

Glad I didn't have to go to SS. I'll have to deal with them next year when I change to my married name.

Thanks Everyone! :thumbsup2
