50 years ago today the debut Album by Lynyrd Skynyrd was released.

They came out of the gate firing on all cylinders with Free Bird,Tuesday's Gone,Simple Man and Gimme Three Steps all part of the debut.

All are gone now but the music definitely lives on-Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama(from the cleverly named second Album Second Helping) remain known around the World.

I prefer hometown hero Neil Young../jk …
Neil Young is the MAN!

Harvest Moon is one of my favorite all time songs.
They play it on the loop in Classic Hall at Pop Century and I have been known to sit there until it comes on!lol

Ronnie Van Zant and Neil actually were big fans of each other.

Neil even said he went too far with his song Alabama.

Ronnie was just saying that Neil had labeled EVERYBODY in Alabama as racist and Ronnie, having spent a lot of time in Alabama recording at Muscle Shoals, etc.,thought that was too broad of a brush.

But,again,Ronnie was a big Neil Young fan-he often wore a Neil Young shirt on stage.

Gee, I’ve always said Lin’erd. Not sure where the name came from but if they wanted it pronounced like Leonard they should have spelled it that way! Definitely more of a Neil Young fan myself, just not into much southern rock or country music.

I actually like the Alabama song. And the Winnipeg/Neil connection.

Thank you for providing more context to the history.

This year I learned that one of Skynyrd's guitarists, Ed King, was also in Strawberry Alarm Clock. Totally different sounds, right there.

Our mother/son dance at his wedding was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I really like the lyrics.

An interesting aside- a couple of weeks after the Skynyrd plane crash,Neil Young played his song Alabama at a charity Concert in Miami and at the end of the song began singing "Sweet Home Alabama" instead of the normal "Oh Oh Alabama" as a tribute to Skynyrd.

I think it was the last time he ever played Alabama in Concert.

It is probably on youtube somewhere.

A young Skynyrd opened a few shows for Strawberry Alarm Clock in Florida and Ed King was so impressed with them that he told Ronnie that he would love to be in Skynyrd if there was ever an opening.

In 1972 just as they were getting started recording Pronounced Leon Wilkeson, the Bass Player, abruptly quit the band.

Ronnie went and got Ed to replace Leon(Ed could play Bass Guitar and Guitar).

After Pronounced was finished Ronnie invited Leon to rejoin on Bass and he moved Ed to Guitar(joining Allen Collins and Gary Rossington) telling Ed that he was a great Guitarist but a TERRIBLE Bass Player!lol

And that is how the famous Skynyrd 3 Guitar Army was born.

Way cool.

Ronnie van Zant and Gary Rossington wrote Simple Man after Ronnie lost his Grandmother and Gary lost his Mother.

Al Kooper who produced the first 3 Skynyrd Albums did not want Simple Man included on Pronounced-he didn't think it was strong enough.

So Ronnie escorted him out to his Bentley and told Al he would let him know when they were through recording it!lol

And it became one of the biggest hits in their Catalog..
