Probably a stupid question....

But are the races cancelled for bad weather? How bad is bad?

Races can be cancelled for bad weather. The Chicago marathon was cancelled (mid-race) several years ago, for severe heat and humidity, and sometimes races will be postponed or cancelled if there is lightning nearby. But I have run races in high wind, rain, sleet, snow, ice, and heat, so cancelling a race is pretty rare.

They can be, just ask the people who did the expedition everest challenge this year.

Most races, Disney and otherwise, are only canceled if the weather is too dangerous to proceed. This could be lightning, torrential rain, a blizzard, or it gets too hot. A light or even medium to heavy rain won't cancel most events and neither will some snow (not that that is a worry so much for Disney). Like Chicago a couple of years ago a race may also be stopped if the temperatures get too high.

If you are speaking about the Marathon in January you probably don't have to worry. January in Florida is neither too hot nor too cold and it is rare it rains any harder than a spring shower up north.

In the past 4-5 years, there has only been one race canceled at Disney that I can remember and that was the Expedition Everest race this past September. It was probably called due to lightening but even then people were still running around. Either my wife or I have participated in all but one of the races during that time period.

They have had at least one race and maybe two in Tropical Storms so rain only won't stop a race, just make it wetter.

The chances are very high that they will have the race. Even if they have to delay it a little if there is lightening in the area.

I'm not really sure about rain by itself. The big reason the EEC got canned was the lightning, not the rain.

Disney uses the 30 second "flash to bang" rule. Basically if the race officials see lightning, they wait 30 seconds. If no thunder, the race goes on. That equals out to about 6 miles.

Yep, saw the "flash to bang" info on the last minute instructions for the TOT 13K.

This is my 1st race so I'm just going to have to suck it up & go for it!

Oh you should have been there the last couple of Januarys. Hot for the events. Not quite as bad this year but ugh those two before...ya just never know.

You won't have the event canceled so just plan on having to do it. You'll do fine. Have fun.
