I'm in the process of trying to find the best price on a Touch for my older dd's birthday gift (late November).

I've seen rumors that there's going to be a 5th generation one possibly coming out early September.

What do you think that's going to do to the price on the 4th gen one? At this point, I can get it new for $200.. and I see where the older generation ones actually go for quite a bit more money than the 4th gen one.

Do you think the price is going to drop when the new one comes out (if it does), or should I buy it now while I can at the $200?

Just want to try to get the best deal possible here.. and not sure if I should act now, or wait a bit.

$200 looks like a good price - but are you comparing equal storage? And is the site/store reputable?

I'm just looking at an 8gb one... figure that'll be good enough for her.

I have a 2nd generation 8gb, that I've had for a couple yrs, and have yet to fill it more than 1/2 way with anything.

Definitely reputable sites I'm looking at (Amazon for new one, Apple for refurbed one.. same price both places).

Just wondering though if as the 5th gen one comes out.. maybe people are going to be selling off their 4th gen ones to buy a new one, and possible price would be dropping?

Tough decision, lol.

My kids found that 8gb got used up a lot faster than they expected. They put a couple movies on theirs as well as songs and games. We ended up getting them 32gb ones earlier this summer to replace. Just fyi.

both my DD ran of room on their 16GB nanos.

I also ran out of room on my 8gb, but I used to work at an electronics store and I can tell you that whatever the price drops too about a month before the new ones are released/announced is usually around the lowest they'll go for a new one but i'm not positive about refurbed or used ones.

My dd has a 3rd generation 8GB and she has it filled with apps and movies, she can't fit any music on it so she uses her nano for that. She wants the 4th (or probably the 5th) so she can take videos. There is no way an 8GB will big enough for her, so if your dd wants to take videos with it the 8GB may be too small.

First off, I have no inside information. I have not run or investigated any of the iOS 5 betas, but here's what I think:

The extent to which people will be dropping their 4G Touches on the resale market is largely (I think) dependent upon new features that are impossible to live without showing up on the new device. So, the 4G update over the 3G included a lot of stuff (Retina Display, FaceTime camera, A4 chip...) that made upgrading to it a good idea for some. However, I am having trouble imagining the possible features that would make someone drop their iPod Touch 4G to get an iPod Touch 5G.

Some of the rumors I am hearing suggest that their might be a capacitive (not physical) button on the new ones, but I cannot see either a) dumping my old device just to get one with this feature, or b) waiting to buy one based on that new feature. There may be a speed bump, or more memory standard, or a price reduction (get more stuff for the same or less money... either one...), but I would not upgrade based on that.

The new iPod Touch 5G will have iOS 5, but this should run just fine on the iPod Touch 4G.

I could be wrong, and Uncle Steve may have set this up to be the kind of update that makes everyone forget things like CEO departures and pending lawsuits... on September 7th, we may know a lot more. Were I you, I would probably wait until the announcement to see whether the new prices let you get more for $200 than you could with whatever price adjustments come out for the 4G model.
