Do you take every bottle to show security that your meds are prescribed?

In theory, that’s what is recommended. I usually portion out my prescriptions and supplements into daily pill bags and don’t bring containers.

If you have any controlled substances, those should always travel in the original container from the pharmacy. Technically, all meds should be in the labeled bottle, but nobody is going to check so many folks do travel with the daily pill minders. And always keep your meds in your carry-on. While it's not common, suitcases have gone for a swim.

Yes, we do. We typically travel for long trips (upwards of 2-4 weeks at a time), so bringing the actual prescription bottle works best for us. Yes, we use a daily pill minder during trip that we fill weekly from the bottles. But there's no way we can fill the daily minder with the numbers of pills necessary for that long a trip to avoid bringing the bottles.

That said, we've never been asked to show the prescription/bottles on any trip yet. But we could be.

They ask you to bring the whole bottles because if there was an issue having all the info on the bottle is vital.

If you don’t then it’s on you to have/know all the vital information.

If your pills get wet/lost/etc and you know it’s XYZ in X dose Vs it’s yellow you have a chance of getting it fixed

We photograph all the current bottles but just bring the necessary ones-

Having a prescription is always a good idea if traveling by plane. Making sure you're not trying to smuggle in drugs with you!

Before a cruise or international flight we always keep the previous prescription bottle to use to bring the vacation's worth of medication with us. Better safe than sorry.

This tip might be especially worth when traveling internationally to Europe. In most EU countries medication is NOT sold by the pill, but in regular boxes (like you find OTC in the US). I can easily see police officers be mistaken and for sure a prescription would help clarify things out.

I would worry about using the old bottle for traveling, though. If the date on it is too old, they could think you're using it for something other than labeled.

We use a pill sorter. What I do is take one pill out of each prescription bottle, put it on the top and take a picture of the label and the pill. I have these stored in my phone so that if there is any question, each pill can be identified. We have been doing this for many years and have never had any issues.

Depends on where you are traveling to; what we know as OTC can be highly illegal in many countries. Best to check each country for exact official information.
