pregnancy question

One of my co-workers is newly pregnant and has a terrible cold. She hasn't been able to get in to see a doctor yet. Does anyone know if there is anything she can take for her cold while pregnant? (with 4 kids I should know this...but I can't remember)

This is pasthetic given I have a 10 month old, but I forget too. The best thing to do is have her call her OB's office and leave them a message. Usually they call back within the day and let her know what she can take.

Any tylonol or sudefed products were ok when I was pregnant but she should double check with her OB.

I would definitely give the OB a call and leave a message. My OB is usually really good about calling me back within a few hours. I have also heard any Tylenol product is ok.

Also "red" Sudafed is ok although I always found it to be completely useless....

If she has a head/chest cold tell her to try to find a nice caffeine free tea and have a few steaming cups during the day to try and loosen everything up. Avoid milk in it if she has alot of "gunk".

Cold/flu - Symptoms including congestion, cough, fever, aches, and sore throat:
Sudafed Tablets (pseudoephedrine)
Liquid Robitussin
Plain Tylenol (acetaminophen)
Chloroseptic

My OB didn't ok anything without being seen until 12 weeks into the pregnancy. Have her call her OB to find out what they recommend.

Regarding taking Robitussin, I also had a bad cold when I was pregnant with DD, now 2, and they did say that I could take Robitussin but only one certain type of it which, sorry to say, I can't remember. I agree that you should speak with your OB/GYN before taking anything.

My OB always said just reg strength Tylenol.

She can't call her OB - she doesn't have one yet. She is a part-time employee here and has no insurance benefits. She has applied for insurance through the state but is waiting for approval and a list of doctors she can call.

my dr said regular tylenol also (NO advil, motrin, asprine, aleave) and I'm almost positive plain Sudafed was ok too.

I also remember their being a specific type of Robitussin so I wouldn't try that before knowing exactly which one.

This is from the pre-natal packet I received in April from my doctor's office:

Head Congestion Stuffy Nose: Benadryl, Sudafed or pharmacy's brand labled pseudoephrine hydrochloride 30-60 mg for every 6 to 8 hours or saline nasal spray.

Cough: Robitussin DM (guaifenesin)

Headache or fever: Tylenol (acetaminophen) 325 ng 1 ir 2 tabs or caplets every 4 hours

My doc's list of self-help remedies for cold/flu is similar to what has been posted:

increased oral fluids
Tylenol for aches and pains
Robitussin (plain) for coughs
Cepacol throat lozenges for sore throats
Sudafed for congestion and allergies (humidifer in room also may help)
If temperature is above 100.8 always call the office.
