Preferences when making ressies

I am curious when members let MS know what their preferences are to things such as building #'s, location, floor preference, ect... Do you do it ASAP in hopes to get your request or closer to your arrival date so you know they have it?

I always make my requests at the time of reserving. DVC did discuss this at the annual meeting and explained that requests are supposed to be honored in the order in which tey were received= so the earlier the better.

Many have reported success with faxing the room controller a few days ahead of arrival. I guess it can't hurt to do that either.

I also like to keep requests pretty basic and only ask for what is important to me. List your requests in order of importance- as they will try to honor them in that order. If you ask for a specific room or building- you are limiting the opportunity for success with your request, so keep that in mind. Good Luck!

Use the KISS method when making requests. When we stayed at VWL earlier this month we asked for N/S and anywhere but the ground floor. On check-in the front desk host mentioned that "and you are not on the ground floor".

In a sort of related anecdote, we stayed the first 2 nights fo the Feb. visit at DXL (still love that resort) and had did the room controller fax about 4 days in advance. When we checked in we were not anywhere near our request (first time that had ever happened). Also, the check-in host remarked that we had a fax waiting on us and it would be a $1.04 charge for it. I laughed and asked her to check and see if the fax was for me or for the room controller. Sure enough, some genius had screwed up handling the fax. And trust me, we have done this probably a dozen times in the past without a hiccup. Both the check-in host and I got a good laugh out of this. We ended up with a better room location than I had even asked for. Such is life.

Doc, when you say that preferences are prioritized by the order in which they are received do you mean DVC would look to the date of the reservation, or the date of the preference request? Allowing for the fact that the preference request was made subsequent to the ressies.

The date of the preference request would be looked at first. That's why it may be wiser to make requests at the same time the reservation is made. Keep in mind that there are other factors involved in the final analysis- how many rooms will be vacated on your day of arrival, what requests are available at all, etc.
WDW is also known for trying to make everyone happy and sometimes my request may be deterred by someone else's insistence at their earlier arrival. While it probably shouldn't affect request priorities, in practice I believe it does happen.

I have never gotten the building I requested. I have always gotten ground floor for medical reasons when requested, either while making reservations or after. However, I got a Boardwalk view villa last November with no advanced request. Go figure!
