Pre Trip Report May 20-28

over on the welcome board there is a relly good packing list I;ll post the link later if I can find it!

{NB: Don't take the following the wrong way; not trolling, just my musings.}

All of the detailed planning in these forums for spending a week in central Florida going to a resort & some theme parks seems really, really excessive. I am beginning to be concerned that there's some huge hidden hassle involved in visiting WDW, as we will be doing the 3rd week of June for a corporate convention. As an example, I have read threads of people planning for a week for 2-4 people, and their plans don't sound that extreme, like they're attempting to do too much or anything, and yet it's all broken down into what's for breakfast, the bus schedule timings, etc., etc.

The most planning I've EVER done for a vacation was three years ago, and no travel agent was involved. I bought tickets and railpasses and reserved everything online. NOTHING went wrong, despite the fact that we were in four foreign countries, and we speak NONE of the languages! Our itinerary:

1. Flew from Chicago -> Frankfurt and spent a weekend visiting relatives in Kaiserslautern, Germany. That Saturday we visited the American cemetery in Luxembourg City, and Sunday we took a day-trip to Trier.

2. Took train from Germany to France and spent four days in Paris, stayed with a couple running a B&B in the 19th arrondisement. Saw all the usual sights, took NO tours, just walked around Paris or took the Metro.

3. Took train from Paris -> Caen and rented a car, spent four days in Normandy touring D-Day beaches, went to Mont-St.- Michel, Dinan, Bayeux tapestry, etc.

4. Took train back to Paris, caught train to Brussels, transferred to train to Bruges. Spent 3 days in Bruges, seeing all the sights of that wonderfully preserved mediæval city.....like the Colonial Williamsburg of Europe.

5. Took train to Amsterdam, went to things we hadn't had time to see on an earlier trip, like the van Gogh Museum and the Ann Frank House.

6. Returned to Frankfurt for our flight back to Chicago. Spent a relaxing afternoon drinking beer in the old section of Frankfurt-am-Main, and got our flight back to the States the next morning, without incident.

I emphasize that I planned this all myself, my plans took up only one sheet of paper, which involved the transfers, etc. listed above, including B&Bs and hotels, not all of which are detailed. We had a great time; what a fabulous vacation! Moral: relax & have fun.

I understand some people are not planners and others are!

I like to make sure I can get in all my favorites and planning is our way of visiting the WORLD before we go! I got to find this site and all of these great people because I planned ahead of time.

for me the planning is just as much fun as the trip!

I appreciate your opinion!
