okay I'm not sure exactly what that is but I think it's people who are more likely to develop diabetes within the next ten years
okay mid 30's, obese, and had gestational diabetes with DD born in 2004
so I'd say I'm a prime candidate for diabetes in the future
but I read weight loss and exercise were even more helpful in preventing diabetes in these types of people that using medication - WOOHOO
they said losing 5-10% of body weight would drastically reduce your chances
so with that said I have lost 29 lbs as of last week 10% of my body weight (288 to 259 current)
on to the next 10% goal (233)
congrats to any other big losers who have decreased there chances of getting diabetes

Diabetes runs through my family, my grandmother died from complications from this disease in her 60s.

My sister, my nephew and my aunt are all diabetics.

As you can see to avoid it is high on my list of life choices. My son and I know that for the struggle there is a reward.

Thanks for the reminder!

You are VERY smart to get this weight off now before diabetes sets in! I didn't- and now am in the process of trying to lose weight with diabetes.... a much harder thing to do I assure you! GOOD FOR YOU!

Way to go! You are doing great.

My husband is diabetic but controls it (now) by following the Atkins Way of Eating. He was out of control for 15 years and ended up with a heart attack and bypass surgery.

If you can control diabetes now you may never have to face that.

I am pretty sure I have insulance resistance. I have lot of the symptoms and some are clearing up with the weight loss. WTG doing something about now!

Diabetes runs in my family also & it's very scary because I saw myself headed in the same direction. I decided to do something about my weight when my sister was diagnosed with diabetes this past Jan. I am now 4.4 lbs away from losing my first 10% and I'm very proud of how far I've come and looking forward continuing my new WOL.

I am in a similar situation - overweight; gestational diabetes & a family history of adult-onset diabetes. Doc told me it wasn't a matter of IF but WHEN I would develop diabetes. He advised maintaining a healthy body weight & exercise to postpone the disease. (It still took me over a year to get motivated.) I choose South Beach Diet because it helps regulate insulin by avoiding spikes in blood sugar. I am also exercising.

After a lot of bloodwork, I was told by my doctor that I was insulin resistant and would probably develop diabetes within 10 years if I did not lose weight and greatly increase my exercise. This was after already losing over 25 pounds since August.

Since the weather improved, I have been riding my bike outdoors and walking when I can. However, I haven't lost any more weight yet. I still have over 50 pounds to lose. I am low carbing and have made this a permanent way of eating with no problem.

No one in my family has diabetes and I don't want to be the first. Let's hope for all of us "ONEDERland hopefuls" (and anyone else that might be in danger) that our determination will win out and prevent this disease.

Congratulations on losing your 10%,luv2nascar! Isn't it great to know that you have reduced your risk of developing diabetes?

My DSIL passed away last September at age 55 and one of the conditions she was fighting was diabetes. Her diabetes was extremely hard to control, I think the other health conditions she had made it difficult to control her blood sugar. Watching her struggles to re-gain her health over the past two years convinced me of the importance of doing something now.

Two of the primary risk factors for diabetes are being overweight and having a sedentary life style and we WISH'ers are doing all we can to control them. I'm so grateful that I have such a wonderful support group to help me reduce my risks! :D
