i just wanted to give a moment to those in arkansas. i couldn't imagine being trapped in a tent or motorhome with the river rising as fast as it did.

it irritates me that no one went through the campground to evacuate them when the water started to rise. we've been in campgrounds where the dnr has come through in their vehicle with a loudspeaker telling us about bad weather.

they should have woke those people up and saved some lives.

prayers....

Terrible situation. We have always loved camping along streams and small rivers in the Smokies, but I've always had in the back of my mind flash flooding. Nothing this terrible ever occured to me though.

This is truely a sad event. Last weekend my wife asked me how we would know if something like this would happen while we were camping along a creek. I told her we would just have to watch the weather and hope the national weather service would get an alert out early enough.

Dont really know if they would have had time to notify the campers. from what I am reading from the emergency service/public safety websites, the Caddo and Little Missouri river rose 8 feet in an hour after recieving over a half a foot of rain in the same time period. But I am not defending them with out knowing all the events

BRDof3 is okay. He said he lived near the park where the flooding occured, but he is okay so far.

I've only experienced one flash flood in my life and trust me, there is no time for warnings. That's why they are called a "flash" flood. It's not a slow rise of water.

I am so saddened by the news of campers enjoying the weekend and being caught off guard. No words can express my feeling of total sadness for these families.

According to the Weather Channel, this area is still experiencing storms. Keep all of our mid-westerners in your prayers.

i could swear that i heard a ranger? noticed and reported that the water had risen at 1 am. it hit them around 4-5 am. that is what i thought i had heard. if they felt it had rose at 1 then there was time to take a precaution.

Its so strange that this happened. 2 days before the same weather system did the same thing where we go camping in New Braunfels Texas at Camp Hauco springs owned by the Rockin R. They had a 10" rain and the Guadalupe river rose 30 feet in 30 minutes. One man was killed. It is so strange to see campers floating down a river. We were just there last month. I feel so bad for all the campers and there family's. The same low pressure came over our house on on tuesday packing 60 mph winds and hard rain.

I grew up camping in that area - Albert Pike was one of our favorite camping/fishing haunts. I remember trick-or-treating at those campgrounds many times. In college, a lot of people would canoe down the river and just set up camp along the way as they went.
It is such a beautiful area, that is why people go there so much. We used to camp near the creeks so we could hear the water rushing at night.

I doubt they will have an accurate count for several days at least. That area is pretty remote and rugged. Plus, like I said, it is very common for people to hike/canoe along and just stop and set up camp somewhere.

PS - I'm talking about the Arkansas floods. I hadn't heard about TX
