this morning on the way to school a police officer ran a stop sign (acc. to current reports) hitting a car and killing two young girls. One is 19 one is 17, sisters. The poor family. I'm waiting for my son to get home as I know he and his brother know the girls and I"m trying to decide whether to call the son who is away from college. I need to know how good of friends my boys were with the girls.

Call your son at college. It's better to hear tragic news from you than from a newscast. My prayers go out to this family.

I agree, I'd call him, and prayers are with the family. :grouphug:

i'll call the college son but checked with the other and just distant aquaintances. The poor parents. There is a bit of a stink here because the police officer who hit the car ran the stop sign and was said to have been exceding the speed limit. He was hospitalized and is returning to desk duty tomorrow. I would imagine things need to be investigated but alot feel if he wasn't a police officer things would have been different.
If you are in an accident, where you accidentally run a stop sign and a fatal accident results can you be arrested and charged with manslaughter? I would have assumed you received the motor vehicle penalties applicable and probably a civil suit but it was still an accident.

In a neighboring town here a policewomen hit a car while traveling at an excessive rate of speed a few weeks ago. She was responding to an automobile accident. A young mother was killed. The officer is now charged with vehicular manslaughter.
What a terrible thing to lose your children like that. Prayers for the family.

the older girl attends my college so they have grief counselors here as well as the local high school.
I don't see how a police officer responding to a call could be charged with VM. It's a horrible accident but an accident. They haven't stated whether this was a response to a call yet or not.

:grouphug: What a tragedy :sad1: . Sending prayers for all concerned.

What a horrible situation. What started out as just another school day ends up destroying a family's life. This particular situation really highlights why many states have laws that prohibit high speed pursuits of suspects in the motor vehicle. Do we even know if this happened in the line of duty? I would hope that it is throroughly investigated and he is held accountable.

The officer can be charged because even if they were responding to an emergency, they still have to protect the public. Two young lives were lost. If there was excesive speed, then there should be charges.A tragic accident, but perhaps avoidable. Prayers for the family.

A horrible thing. My prayers for the family. It's a fine line, I think, regarding police officers "rights" in answering a call. Speeding through a red light or a stop sign, even with siren and lights, without slowing down to observe other traffic (if that happens to turn out to be the scenario in this case) is wrong, imho. Someone coming on the side street would have little, if any, time to avoid a collision. An officer should make sure the intersection is clear (if he/she does not have the right of way) before proceeding.

And I agree, there should be consequences for the officer. ESPECIALLY if it was not in the line of duty. The Police officers here abuse traffic laws all the time. And people get hurt. It's scary. I think that if a police officer is in persuit of another vehicle or is on the way to the scene of an accident, then lights and sirens should be full blast. Otherwise, all traffic laws should be obeyed. No excuses.

Absolutely. We have a family friend who was part of an ambulance crew responding to an emergency. They had the right of way and a police cruiser ran the intersection, broad sided the ambulance, killed the patient and put our friend in the hospital with muliple injuries for weeks. Sometimes there is a callous disregard for the laws and it results in a lot of sadness.

What i'm wondering is, is there a traffic or criminal charge that increases the penalty for a traffic offense if you cause a fatality. For ex. here he ran a stop sign leading to the fatality. Does a charge like vehicular manslaughter apply here? Is it a statute on the books?
