Prairie update

Last week when we were leaving for vacation, the Prairie Restoration folks came and started burning just as we were about to leave. We came back last night to find they had everything seeded, and today they came back after the rain and hand planted 1000 wildflower seedlings amongs the 24 seeded varieties and 12 prairie grass varieties. I can hardly wait to see something growing and blooming!

That is very exciting Do they tell you what you're going to have blooming or will it be a complete surprise?

Wow! It should be very nice, just add buffalo! There's a metro park in our county that is planted with native grasses and such and I love to look at it and imagine the buffalo that were here, in Ohio. That's according to the signs, I didn't make it up. It just blows my mind, to me it seems like off the beaten path for them.

Diane, did anyone get pictures of the burn?

No pictures of the burn or the seeding operation since we were gone then.

They did give me a list of what they planted for seedlings. Prairie Onion, Rough blazing star, and Meadow blazing star were the most numerous of what they planted, but they also included leadplant, thimbleweed (2 varieties), butterfly weed, whorled milkweed, smooth aster, New England Aster, Azure aster, wild indigo, prairie phlox, compass plant and spiderwort. Some are already blooming! The prairie onion is really pretty. Amongst the things seeded was prairie smoke, and that is beautiful too. Now if I could keep the birds from eating all the seeds! All the birds around here think we have provided a virtual buffet!

Everything is starting to green up already, and I enjoy walking out there to check things out each morning.
