Practicing Catholic Democrats?

This has been bothering me most of my adult life. How do you go to chruch on Sundays 52 weeks a year and follow the teachings of the pop yet still vote democrat with so many of them if not all being pro abortion? I mean either you beliee in the teachings of your church and follow their doctirne or why show up?
I was rasied catholic, don't go to church for a variety of reasons yet still consider myself a catholic and my children as well. However I do not devote the time and energy into the church enough for it to reflect on my politcal views.However some do and should yet they are in my mind hypocrites once they hit that polling booth.
Could someone explain the hypocrisy of it to me?

This also might apply to other religions though I am not sure as I have only spent time in the Catholic and Episocalian churches.

Well even the Pope came out against the War, which the republican party is usually more gung ho for. I personally believe the Democrats are more in line with the teachings of Christ, helping others, social programs, tax cuts to help money trickle up instead of down from the top, not judging people, tolerance, etc., etc. And being Pro-Choice does NOT mean being Pro-Abortion anyway. No one likes abortion, no one. And yes I was raised in the Catholic Church.

Catholicism and Christianity are two different sets of beliefs. Many aspects are similar or "related" but they are not one and the same.

I think you meant Catholicism and "Protestantism" are two different different set of beliefs.

Catholicism and Christianity are two separate beliefs???? Thats so weird. Catholics are Christians. Then again I was raised Catholic BUT my mother became a Born Again Christian and they didn't like the Catholics too much. So called Christians can be so destructive sometimes.

That's a good question, OP. My next door neighbor is Catholic and she says that everyone in her church is very much anti-abortion. However, Catholics from other parishes are more liberal and some of them are Democrats and pro-abortion. I would think that the Pope is very clear on his stance, but I guess some Catholics just pick and choose what they want to believe in. I don't know how they justify it, but I guess they reconcile it in their minds somehow.

One can be personally pro-life but politically pro-choice, and that would describe most of the Catholics I know (and that's quite a lot - I was raised Catholic in a heavily Catholic neighborhood; I no longer practice myself, but all of my family and most of my longtime friends are still active Catholics). It isn't about choosing what parts of the religion to follow, it is about leaving it to each person to choose their own path rather than forcing morality via law.

thats a good way to put it! it shows you the ignorance of some people regarding the Catholic Church, or more likely, it was just someone trying to upset Catholics on this thread. I am certainly no expert on the Church, but if there's one thing i'm SURE of, it's that the Church will be around for thousands of more years, just like its survived the last couple thousand and thank goodness, the Pope isn't going anywhere either!

The Catholic Church is not going to survive in the modern world much longer IMO. They have lost thier power in free world. Parishes are closing.
I agree with this I think this will be the last Pope.

The Church survived the Reformation. It's lasted 2000 years. I'm sure it will survive, no matter what you think.

Nope - absolutely not.

The Pope is in charge of the Catholic religion, worldwide. We are a rather rebellious lot here in the States, but he is still head of our Church.

And I agree, there are some Catholic churches that are more liberal than others. There needs to be a little "shopping" sometimes, to find a church that we feel comfortable in.

Why do so many people that attend churches that don't believe in divorce ultimately get a divorce? People don't always follow all the teachings of their religion.
