Well I guess I have joined that infamous club of potty-training Moms!

We bought DS his own little potty about 3 weeks ago because he starting showing interest. He was always asking us what we were doing when we were in the bathroom and he wanted to sit on the toilet himself, etc.. He was also periodically going to the bathroom door and saying "potty". We felt it was time to at least provide the equipment since he was showing interest but I really did not want to push anything on him.

Over the last few weeks he would ask at least once a day to go "potty". He would sit on his potty, often times while looking at a book, but nothing really happened. I was not worried. I was just glad that he seemed to at least begin the process.

Well tonight after DS's bath he comes streaking down the hall into the living room with DH close behind with the towel. It seemed our little streaker didn't want the towel but wanted to air dry. He spent probably 3-4 minutes streaking around, shrieking and just in general having a blast when he squatted over by my couch. I felt like I was in slow motion in a movie when I quickly stood up and yelled "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I just knew what was coming.

Well imagine my suprise when it was not #2 but #1 that happened. I was in the middle of standing up when I saw a nice high arc of pee hit the side of my couch!!!! I just couldn't believe it and I didn't quite know what to do next. I quickly tried to guide DS to his potty but when I looked at him his eyes were as big as saucers!!!! He was just standing there looking amazed when he says "Water!, Water!, Water!" and starts pointing at the couch. "Yes..water. Water goes in the potty not on Mommy's couch!". It then dawned on me that he had never really realized what pee was. We have used the term but he has never (well at least since he was like 4 months) had an accident when he was not wearing a diaper or submerged in the tub. He really didn't know what it was. I guess maybe he was not as ready as we had hoped.

Well I mentioned again that his "water" needed to go in the potty so he takes off streaking back down the hallway to the bathroom and then wants to sit on his potty. I was really hoping he would finish the job so he could make more of a connection but he didn't. However, he did sit there for longer than he has in the past and he seemed much more excited about it. When he got off the potty he IMMEDIATELY had a diaper put on him. I didn't want two accidents in one night. However, we did discuss where he needs to put his "water" in the future.

"Nathan, where does your 'water' go?" .... "Potty"...."That's right. In your potty or in your diaper." Of course, he also pointed at my couch!!!

I am just starting this myself. My son keeps saying he "can't" but he won't try. Ugh! He'll sit there and just do nothing. It's only just begun! LOL!!

when my oldest son was learning, he always wanted to stand like a big boy. After he would go he would start doing a happy pee dance and slam the toilet seat down. I was constantly telling him to put the seat down gently. So one day he goes and proceeds to do his happy dance, except this time he didn't move away from the falling seat fast enough. Poor little guys you know what was black and blue for a week.

All I can say is get used to accidents! They seem to learn much faster if allowed to run around bottomless.

Oh boy, Becka! Sounds like you are in for some fun now.
My oldest DS wasnt trained until after 3 1/2, he just wasnt ready and had no desire to do it. The plus to this was hes never had an accident. My youngest DS was a few months before he turned 3, but he has had a few accidents.
Just remember someday, you will be through this stage.

After reading your story I think I'll wait to get my new couch! I have twins to potty train who will be 3 in June and they just don't get it yet. DS has no concept yet but DD tells me she is wet right after she goes. They also fight over the potty so this weekend off I go to buy another one. One can only hope that a second potty will be the solution (I don't really believe this but I can hope!!)

a piece of advice.

even after he's potty trained, whenever you go out, pack extra clothes for him "just in case".

I forgot that rule once. just once. and wouldn't you know it, that was the day she was too busy playing in the ball pit to realize she had to "go". at least she didn't wet herself until after she came out of the ball pit.

I didn't potty train after the first one. For two and three I didn't even get the little seat out. I didn't even mention it. They just started climbing on the regular toilet when they were ready. I have pictures of the three year old holding the two year old on the potty. They both basically learned together (also had a four year old). Three year old is a boy and two year old was a girl. It worked great except the two year old insisted on standing up and peeing over the toilet for quite some time. Until the boys convinced her that NO girls really did sit when they went pee-pee.

Aww good luck with that! Hopefully he's not like me because I was stubborn and my parents always had to bribe me.

Our DD (almost 20 mo) just got the idea this morning. We bought her potty about a month ago because she kept saying poo poo and pee pee when she was ready to be changed (immediately after going). Since then she would sit on it once a day or so for about 20 minutes and do nothing and then scream bloody murder when we tried to put her diaper back on.

We decided to take a break and didn't mention the potty for a week. This morning she asked to go and so we undressed her and let her sit on the potty. Poor thing shot right up when the pee started flowing. DH got her sat down again quickly so the mess was very minimal, and we gave her lots of praise. Plus she got to "pat pat" (wipe) which I told her she couldn't do until she made pee pee in the potty. She was so proud. And so are we.

When DD (now 11) was potty training we were doing all we could to encourage her. One day, in moment of sillyness, we decided to be potty training cheerleaders. We did the old "Gimme a P!" routine and spelled out P-O-O-P! When we got the the "What's that spell?" DD looked at us, a euphoric and delighted look on her face and exclaimed "McDonald's!!!!!!". Well...we only wish we had had the video camera going, although we're pretty sure the McDonald's corporation wouldn't have found our brand of potty-humor as funny as we did.

This reminded me of what had happened with DS when he was about 2. We went to Atlantic City and we had just gotten into our room and I needed to change his pee peed diaper. So I get him undressed and then DH says come look out the window. I got distracted with DS and went to the window and he followed. So here is DS standing on a chair looking out the window with a bare bottom. All of the sudden he squats down and shouts out POPPIE!!! So DH quickly grabs a bag and puts it under him.

Oh, this topic brings back memories. My grandson has to streak around his house every night after his bath also!! One time when he was at my house, he stopped by the back of my leather recliner and decided to christen it!! Thank goodness it was leather and I could wash it down!

My DS was three when he finally decided to use the potty full time. He was tough. He got the number one thing down, but refused to do number two and he got constipated really bad. I finally gave in and told him that if he had to do number two, just bring mommy a diaper and he could use it for number two. Things got a lot nicer that way by not forcing the issue. Finally, on his third birthday, he used the potty for number two. Don't worry if your DS does not potty train until he is three; boys have a tendency to train later.

DD1 had a big brother who she would take a peak in and watch sometime him going potty. We got her a new potty chair and I asked her if she wanted to use the potty. She was excited and went to the potty and grabbed her belly button like big brother did to go potty but a little lower! I had never had her in the potty with me and big brother was her mentor, I guess!

My DD2 was 26 months old when we were in Target. I was getting big sister some more panties and DD2 saw some Cinderella panties and wanted them. I told her that she had to use the potty to wear those and she said okay and she never used a diaper again. One extreme to the other in our family!!!!!!!

I have a friend whose son will be 4 in June. He refuses to sit on the potty or toilet. He has the pee thing down with no problem, but refuses #2. He goes to preschool and holds it all day until he gets home and then goes in his pants. She has tried books, they watched a Mr. Rogers show on the topic, still willn't do it.
