Potty Training Boys

Mine were all three before we started. Worked well, because they were ready. You can't make kids ready!

This really does work! I did it with both of my boys, and within a week or two they were trained.

Using real cotton underwear will only work if the child wants to be trained. My son was always in cloth diapers due to an allergic reaction to disposable diapers. When he turned 2, we changed him to cotton underwear. I guess for my son, there was not a big difference in material....just the way they fit. I was always diligent about having him in fresh diapers and underwear. I always wondered how he could walk around with messy or wet pants. I think he was just so hyper, he did not even realize he needed to go or was wet. I could ask him if he needed to go and he would say no. Walk him to the toilet and he would go and go. He also had nighttime accidents until he was almost 10.

Does your son go to Early Childhood Special Ed classes through the school system? Our middle son is developmentally delayed and went there. We didn't have to worry about getting him pottied train since they were equipped to handle it. He was almost 5 before he was day timed trained and about 51/2 little older for overnites.

DS goes to speech therapy classes 3 times a week, it is at a school that provides all kids of services from early intervention to adult, but he doesn't attend the pre school there. He was no way ready for preschool at the time, when he was 3 he was on an 18 month level for speech. I don't want to put him in the pre school there for lots of reasons I won't get into here. Thanks for posting because it has made me feel better that he isn't trained yet.:goodvibes

She said if they can tell you when the are hungry and thirsty then they can tell you when they need to use the bathroom.
That is so completely untrue. They are two completely different sensations. Some kids might be ready that early, but I would be most aren't.

Absolutely. I tried putting my son in underwear the other day when he was not wanting his diaper back on. He peed within a few minutes and it didn't bother him at all.

I understand the method of putting them in underwear cold turkey but I'm just not willing to do that. I don't want to clean up messes. If that puts of potty training a bit, fine by me.

My DS was trained around 3 - or a little later. He had no interest, I did - the reward, bribing, running around naked, wearing underware. He never liked the small potty chair. Nothing worked.

One day I decided to throw cherrios in the big toilet, had him stand on a stool and try and hit the cherrios. He loved it and from that day on he was trained.

I really think it was a matter of when he was ready. Like everyone says - you won't have your child going to lst. grade in diapers!

My son is in Preschool Early Childhood Special Ed classes through the school system. He receives speech, ot and pt therapy through the school district and is developmentally delayed. He is going to be 5 this week and has no interest in being potty trained. I have tried the pull ups and the cotton underwear but he just does not mind being wet . He also does not like to sit on the big potty , I did purchase a smaller child seat that fits inside the big seat but he does not like that either . I am going to take a break from the training and figured I would try it again in a couple months. I also feel better and not so alone reading that others are in the same situation.
