I posted this on another board with a big 0 responses, so I thought I would try here.

An opportunity for my dh to work at a company in Tuscaloosa has popped up unexpectedly. We have been looking to move south from Michigan for awhile now, but never looked into Alabama until a company found my dh's resume online and called him up. They are flying him down for an in person interview sometime in the next week or so, since the phone interview went so well.

We have been looking around the area online and I think that maybe Northport or Brookwood look like possible areas for our kids to go to school???

We can't afford private school for four kids, so I need some help with this. The company is in the southeastern part of Tuscaloosa if that helps any.

I am trying to be prepared if they hire him!!

Any other info you think might be helpfull would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Amanda

My husband is military and we lived in Tuscaloosa for 3.5 years. My entire family LOVED it and we would move back in a heartbeat if we could. Unfortunately, the army doesnt seem to want to send us back!

Its been a number of years since we have been there but I would look in the Northport area.

Good Luck!
ROLL TIDE!!!

i live a couple hours north of tuscaloosa, and would recommend northport as well. everyone i know who lives there LOVES it. tuscaloosa is a GREAT city to live in. obviously, it's crowded on football saturdays, but the excitement is contagious. brookwood is a suburb of birmingham, if it's the brookwood i'm thinking of, and is quite a drive from tuscaloosa. (tuscaloosa may have its own brookwood) good luck to your DH! alabama is a great state!

I grew up in Birmingham, which is only about 45 mins or so from Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa is a nice area. I hope you like football!!! It is a BIG (as in lots of importance placed on it) college town since it is the home of the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide). I always found it a very warm & welcoming place.

I used this site when I was moving from the South up to NJ. I have found it to be very helpful and accurate.

Best of luck!!!!!!!!!

Roll Tide!!!

I grew up an hour from T-town. It is a great town. I have a friend that lives in Vance which is between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and she loves it. She also really likes the school system there. This is a great area for growth because it seems that Tuscaloosa is trying to reach out to Birmingham. Depending on where your DH's job might be in town I would really think hard about the Moundville area. Traffic can ne a HUGE headache trying to get down Hwy 69 at 5 o'clock.

I also agree with momof1princess we love our SEC football! But I guess that you could tell that from my screen name!

I live in Tuscaloosa (for 15 years now.) I will be happy to answer any questions for you. Northport is great area to live. I am down 69 S and love it (Hillcrest school zone.) I absolutely never go to Brookwood, it is "off the path."

Ask away or send me a pm.

No advice as far as a school district, but never, ever wear orange in public lest you be mistaken for a Florida, Tennessee, or god forbid, an Auburn fan. Learn to say things like 'Roll Tide!!!!' and 'Saban is worth every penny' and genuflect whenever you hear the word 'bear'.

I am a Bama girl, born and bred, or as I like to refer to it, 'God's Country.'

Roll Tide!!!! My son and his family live off of hwy 69 behind Hillcrest high school my DDIL is a kindergarten teacher for a Tuscaloosa city school. They love Tuscaloosa and the hillcrest area. I live 2 hours south of them. Roll Tide Roll!!!!!!!

YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!! I am from Dothan AL but have family in the Hoover area. I miss HOME!!! The cost of living is cheaper, SUPER NICE FRIENDLY people... and just a beautiful state. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I live in Tuscaloosa. I absolutely love it. It's big enough to have things to do, but it's still small enough to be friendly.

Our family lives in the Hillcrest area which is on the southern side of Tuscaloosa. The schools are great! The area is growing. Very friendly. My parents live in Northport, and they like it a lot. The schools in Northport are also good. We actually lived out towards Brookwood several years ago, but it wasn't a good fit for our jobs and lives so we moved closer in to Tuscaloosa.

If you would like some more information about the area, please send me a PM, and I will send you my e-mail address and do my best to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for all the info!

So, will my husband get beat down in the street if he is wearing his Michigan State stuff?? :scared1:

We love football, so that is a plus! :cheer2:

It seems there aren't many houses that are more than three bedrooms for rent?? We have four kids(two boys and two girls) we were hoping to get at least a four bedroom if we move, hopefully something will pop up.

The kids want to know about the malls! lol Do they have the normal ,all stores like aeropostale(sp?) and would there be a tjmaxx or marshalls anywhere close?

The company is on the southeast side of Tuscaloosa by Cottondale. Right now my dh drives 36 miles to work and would like to be a little bit closer than that the next place he works at.

oh no need to worry about shopping! being a college town, tuscaloosa has LOTS of shopping choices, and all of the "in" stores are included. where else would the college crowd shop? lol. if you can't find what you want, there's always the galleria in hoover (suburb of birmingham) - that place has EVERYTHING! have you contacted a tuscaloosa realtor? with the real estate market being so down, i'm sure there are lots of rentals out there, and/or people looking to sell who would be willing to rent to you for a while, until you find something permanent. again, good luck to your DH! as long as you're not wearing anything with notre dame on it, you should be fine, lol.

WAR EAGLE!! Lived in AL most of my life and just moved to ATL, GA area about 3 months ago-- missing AL a lot. Tuscaloosa is nice but dont let them suck you in to the madness!! Their is a lovely village on the plains not too far away!Good Luck with the move-- we are still adjusting a bit!:)
