What kind of advice can anyone offer about staying at the Disney Hilton Head Resort? We know that going to WDW this summer might not be in the plans, but DHH might be. What is there to do there? Does it compare to any of the WDW resorts?

You might want to post this over on the DVC Forum - HH is a DVC Resort, so you'll get lots of feedback.

Hilton Head is just such a great place that you don't have to just be satisfied with what is offered at the resort. Great restaurants abound. There are fireworks at Shelter Cove every Tuesday(?) or Wednesday(?) night, the area the resort is on. You can walk across the bridge and they have a whole festival atmosphere with activities, food, a show then the fireworks. You can go to other plantations such as Sea Pines ($5.00 charge per car for the day) and climb up the lighthouse, see the yachts, shop and eat, play in the great playground built into and around a huge live oak tree, and see a wonderful children's entertainer.

The resort itself has a nice pool at the property and another at the beach club in the plantation where it is situated. You have to take a van from the resort to the beach area as the resort lies in the tidal marsh area...very neat! They have giant beach ball like things in a children's splah area with water shooting up, an access down to the beach, snack bar, etc.

I can't compare HH with any WDW resort. Self contained? (meaning choices of dining area) No! Lots of dining choices within a 5 mile radius? YES.

When we went to HH in 2002, we didn't know what to expect (I hadn't yet heard of the DIS). After 2 days of telling each other what HH wasn't, we started to discover what HH was/is.................. a great place to relax! I loved the kayak trip/tour (trip/tour leaves from DVC HH). The children loved the resort pool area. It was a great trip in that we never would have ventured to Hilton Head Island without WDW having the resort.

Good luck in your decision.

It can be difficult to compare HH with a Disney World location. Searching this forum you can find lots of threads dealing with HH and this same issue.

We put off going until we saw every other resort first. We loved Vero and almost bought into the vacation club there. And, from the brochure HH just didn't seem like a place for us. Finally, we did go to HH, and we bought into the vacation club right away. Best thing we ever did.

We absolutlely love HH. For us it is more of a beach vacation than anything else. We spend our entire week on the beach or in the pool and find this very relaxing. If you have children, you'll find a wonderful selection of activities with some of the best cast members anywhere. Our kids actually look forward to these events as much as the beach. The Cast Members also run programs for the family and even adults. Out favorites are programs with the Naturalist, (beach combing, star gazing, etc.)

We find the rooms quite adequate for us, usually we are in a studio with the kids on the pull-out sofa. We shop for breakfast and lunch at the grocery store down the road and order out for dinner. The resort has two snack bars, with your basic hot dogs, fries, sandwichers, etc. which is fine for a quick snack, but I can't eat that all week. Also, they are only open for breakfast and lunch. No dinner options on site.

The island has thousands of restaurants, many cater to vacatioing familes with children. Again, search this forum for threads on eating out in HH. One suggestion was to gor for the early-bird specials, since some eateries can be pricey.

If it is just two adults going, keep in mind this is a summer hot-spot for families. Poolside can get crowded and loud with so many kids and teens. I know adults complain about this aspect of the resort and can suggest they go off season to avoid this if it is a concern.

Bottom line, if you like beach vacations, this is a perfect place. If lounging on the beach is the last thing you want to do, maybe you should hold off. It is not Disney World, but is is all things Disney in every detail - it can be very magical.
