We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Portobello Yacht Club, yesterday. This has been on my list of to try restaurants for a long time. It will soon be renovated along with Pleasure Island. For those not familar with the PI back story, it is the home of the Merriweathers, founders of PI. There is sign by the front entrance that explains the story.
The dining party consisted of myself, DH and DS 13yrs old. My husband had the Seafood Cioppini (Shrimp, scallops, clams, calamari, and fresh fish simmered to perfection with white wine, tomatoes, herbs and a garlic crostini $15.95). I had a taste of this. It was really good. Seafood was fresh.

I had the Wood Roasted Trout. (Oven roasted trout with artichokes, roasted potatoes, kalamata olives and capers in a lemon butter sauce $14.95) This dish had a lot of flavor. I really enjoyed it. My son ordered the pepperoni pizza. Didn't try it. However, it looked like a good pizza with a "fluffy" crust. The server brought out a bread tray at the beginning of the meal. Along with butter, it also included a whole clove of roasted garlic. It was nicely roasted and had a great nutty flavor.

Our server was very attentive and familiar with the food. There were not many dinners during this lunch time. I had a reservation, but we could have just walked in. If you are an annual passholder, you get 20% off of lunch & 10% off dinner. This is a Levy restaurant. If you don't have a Levy points card, ask for one. We got double points for our first visit with the card. Collect 250 points and get a $25.00 gift certificate. Overall, we really enjoyed our lunch and we hope that when we visit again, after the remodeling, that it will be just as enjoyable. :thumbsup2

It's a fave of ours as well! I may be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that when it re-opens it's going to be "family style" dining.:confused3

Gha! When does it close? I may have to get up there for one last meal before then. :sad2:

We had an ADR there for our October trip but as soon as we found out that it was changing to "family style" we canceled it. I've seen that by early October of this year it should be totally switched over.

I can't think of anything less appealing than family style Italian dining. If I want a mess of noodles and sauce I'll make it at home, thanks anyway.

I hate to hear that PYC is changing. We have enjoyed several good meals there

Here's the official workd from Levy about the Portobello renovations:

"Portobello will go through a complete interior and exterior renovation, just in time for its 20-year anniversary, which takes place in 2009. The restaurant will drop the phrase Yacht Club and simply be called Portobello. It will become more of a country Italian trattoria, which we're very excited about. Renovations on Portobello just started a few days ago and will be in different phases, at which time sections of the restaurant will be closed off but the rest of the dining areas will be open for guests to enjoy lunch or dinner. The only complete closure of the restaurant is scheduled to take place September 27 - October 12, for kitchen and work area renovations, with the restaurant reopening on October 13. Other than that, we will remain open during the entire transformation."

We have been dining there for 18 years and look forward to revisiting them after the renovations. Like others, we hope the menu doesn't change too terribly much.

Anyone know if John Coombs is still a server there? He was wonderful.

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanks for posting.
