I was reading the thread about having DVD players installed in cars and I think the portable ones are the way to go too.

So what brands has everyone bought and are there any special features that I must absolutely look for?

I saw this thread and ended up ordering the Audiovox D1730 for $299, with shipping it was $320. I've seen it on sale at Target since for $285 so it might be available for a better price now.

The girls love it and we've definately used it quite abit already. I don't have a DVD player on my TV so I just use it when I watch DVD's. I can hook it up to the TV but have found it's nice to be able to watch things that I wouldn't have on while the kids are around (got the Sex & City DVD's recently). With the portable I just use earplugs and I can watch anything I want whenever and don't have to worry about little eyes or ears. ;)

The player, some accessories & a CD/DVD holder all fit into an old camera case I had and it was so easy to tote with us on our last trip.

I have an Audiovox PE701 (marketed under the Eddie Bauer name). I bought it from Target for around $250 on sale this summer. It was so nice to have this at the airport while waiting for flights! I am looking forward to using it on driving trips planned next year. We normally carry a TV/VCR combo for my son to watch tapes.

I've got a Panasonic DVD - LV50, which I had chipped so it will play DVDs from any country.

Cost around $620 (going by the current £-$ rate), and although it's expensive, the picture quality is superb, and it's very small and light.

A word of warning - battery life on these is fairly poor, largely because of the fact it is essentially powering a DVD player and a TFT screen at the same time. As a result, I think the best batteries get you about 3 hours of playback. That's only one playing of a film like Apocalypse Now before a recharge, and extra batteries are hard to source, and VERY expensive.

Hope that helps.

I'm also interested in this info, we were thinking of purchasing one also.

Anyone else have advice to offer?

I just ordered one from http://www.compusaauctions.com but it hasn't arrived yet. I use that site all the time, I have won auctions for 2 computers, and now this, and the prices are incredible. A lot of the stuff is open box items from the stores, but it's all warenteed like new.
The player is a U.S. Logic, but actually made by Mintek, I think. They've had good reviews, and for an 8" screen, I just couldn't pass up $208.00.
Also, I'd rather deal with an actual company online, than some anonymous joker from Ebay.

We bought 2 Polaroid portable dvd players for the car. They have 7" screens--I wouldnt get any smaller of a screen. I loved the 10" screen but those go for about $600-$700. And we bought the carrying case/car holder for ours so when the 2 little ones are watching a movie they can see it from there. Its been a good investment, we use them all the time. However its in the car or house so we havent used the battery yet.

Here is the link to the one we have. I got it from Home Shopping Network and they have a special right now to split up the payments and NO shipping. We really have enjoyed. My dad used it this weekend and is going to get himself one now. Hope this helps.
