POR REVIEW

Date: Nov 26 - Dec 4, 2005
Acadian House Mansions
Who: just me and 7 yo DGS
Arrived at resort via ME bus: 11:00 am
Wait in line to check in: 30 mins
Room ready: 2 pm

My overall opinion of POR is that while it is showing some wear and is not as spanking new as the Dixie Landings mansions I remember of 1997, the grounds are still as breathtakingly beautiful as ever. As tired as I was from the uncomfortable mattresses and a day at the parks, I never minded the walks to lobby, bus, pools, laundry, etc, as each time was a feast for the eyes. Simply gorgeous!

OUR ROOM: I was satisfied with our second floor room in Acadian House, even though I was hoping to try Alligator Bayou this time around. Acadian, was a short walk to the north bus depot. Though the view from our window looked down on some sort of containers that may house dirty towels or septic tanks or some darn thing and that sometimes guys would park huge carts of dirty towels in front of the room and throw them off the balcony into the bins below, this honestly did not bother me. No, really, it didn't, I just want to make it clear, I was not there for a room with a view. We spent most of our time at the parks.

The Good Stuff:
The landscaping, can't say enough good things about it. Those walks down the river... I never tired of the view or took it for granted. The clippity clop of the horses hooves across the bridge, the bunnies scampering about, the peaceful surroundings really make me feel like I'm on vacation. I remember one negative thing that stood out about POP was being surrounded by all that concrete, not enough nature and greenery. POR is different. Just beautiful.

Yeah! We got the free fridge in our room, but boooo, it was set so high that our stuff froze. The button to adjust the temp was missing, so couldn't lower the temp.

We always found a table at the food court. DGS favorite table would be any table near the big wheel. The cast members were so nice and helpful (just a few exceptions). I know there is more good stuff... I will add on if I remember it, though this post is quite long already. ;)

The Not So Good Stuff:

The mattresses from hell - oh, my aching back...more on this here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=974826

The room was not as clean as I would have liked. We found things under the beds, such as an empty mini bottle of Seagrams, a sheet of unused bunion pads, various scraps of paper, crumbs in the drawers.. and more, but more unsettling was that the corners of the bathroom floor were not cleaned. There were teeny scraps of paper, like ripped off pieces of tags from clothes or towels, and yucky hairs in the corners. Ick! But I know no resort is exempt from "gifts" from previous guests. But the hair thing ... :crazy2: ugh!

Ok, I am one of those people that removes the heavy bed spreads off the beds every day as soon as we get in the room. I don't even want to know what those awful orange brown stains were on the back side of the bed spread and again, I know you can find this at all resorts, it's just never a pleasant sight and just gives me a yucky feeling. I guess the maids got so tired of finding our bed spreads folded up on the floor each day, that one day we walked in to find that the bed had been made up without the bed spreads. I was happy! :)

The worst thing that happened at POR was on day #2. We were leaving for the parks at 10 am. I notice the maids cart next door, so I figure our room will be cleaned next. When we return to our resort later that night at 7 pm (that's 9 hours later) I look up to the second floor to our room and the lights are on and the blinds are wide open. As I approach our room, I notice the door to our room is not shut all the way! I do not have to use my KTTW card. All I have to do is give the door a little push, and it opens. Our room was unlocked for anyone to get in and it was like this all day, for 9 hours with all the lights on and the blinds open. Since it was just DGS and I, I worried someone might be inside the room. Without thinking, I go into the room and check behind doors and the shower curtain, just to be sure no one is in there. All is well, so I check to make sure nothing is missing. It appears everything is in present and accounted for. Luckily, I always use the safe for the good stuff. Looking back, I should have probably called someone before entering the room, just in case, but I was caught off guard.

So, I call the front desk to tell them that I believe my maid left our door open all day. I expressed my concern, since it is only DGS and I in the room and how I need to feel safe and know I can leave for the parks with the comfort that no one will be waiting in my room when we get back, that my room is locked and my stuff is safe. They said they would be sure to tell a supervisor about this and they will get back to me.

I heard nothing from them, so the next day, I taped a note to the inside of our door for the maid that said, "Please made sure to shut door all the way. Yesterday it was left open all day. Thank you." Then, I went to the registration area to report this again in person. The girl took down the info, but I never heard a word from any manager saying they were sorry this happened. All I wanted out of this was the security that I could leave my room and know my stuff inside would be safe, not open to anyone that happened to walk by. I wanted someone to tell the maids to be careful and make sure to close the door securely when she left the room. Well, I never heard a word from anyone and that was disappointing.

Five days later, the day before we left, DGS and I were sitting on the stairs outside, near our room waiting for the maid to finish cleaning it (it was about 3:30 pm and our room still had not been cleaned). One of the maids (not ours) happened to walk by. Our maid came out and told the other maid who we were (in another language). This other maid told us they are going to get maintenaince to come fix our door. Well, yeah, whatever, the incident happened 6 days ago... too little.. too late and we are leaving tomorrow. So, the moral of this story is to check your door before you leave to make sure it is closed and pray your maid will do the same because no one really cares if your room is open all day or not but you.

Other not so good stuff: a few of the girls at the POR food court hamburger hot dog grill are severely lacking in customer service skills. Yet, all the food court cashiers and other cast members at POR were very sweet.

The bus service was a little disappointing. I'm not talking about the drivers, they were awesome, full of the old fashioned Disney magic I remember! They were so nice, helpful, and even humorous at times. I'm talking about waiting an hour two nights in a row for a bus to MK. Then the nightmare at MK when you want to return to your resort. POR is huge. The bus lines can get huge! It is no fun to have to wait an hour at MK only to stand on the bus smashed in like sardines all the way from MK to POR at midnight, after MVMCP, or any night. I think Disney can do better than that.

Other notes: I like the fact that the laundry room was next to our quiet pool. We could swim while waiting for the laundry. Here's some advice... while I noticed the main pool had towels for guests to use, there were no towels for guests at the quiet pool while we were there, so we brought our own towels from the room. Just thought I'd mention it, if it saves you a trip back to your room.

Would I stay at POR again? Hmmm.. not sure... maybe if they replace those uncomfortable mattresses ;) and make vast improvements to the bus system. Ok, I just heard on another thread that all the WDW resorts will be switching over to the "firm" mattresses that POR has now, so there will be no escaping them. As for the bus system, I heard a rumor on the transportation board that the bus system is in for some changes as well. And I know that all the things that bug me at POR exist at other resorts too, so I do not want to sound like I am down on this resort, not at all. I still think the values and mods are a bargain. That said, if I never stay at POR again, I will most definetly miss the scenery and since it was our very first on site stay back in '97, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Thanks for reading,
Tink

I enjoyed reading your report, as I also stayed at POR recently. I was there in late October and while it was OK, I probably won't return anytime soon. Like you, I would have loved to try Alligator Bayou as I like the scenery over there, but usually only larger families get those rooms. But the three times I stayed at POR over the years, I keep getting mansions, usually by the parking lot. I do agree the grounds are beautiful! And I love the boat to Downtown Disney. :)

I agree about the buses, as there are five bus stops between POFQ and POR, and it takes a long time to get anywhere! And when you add in that most buses (especially morning ones) now has scooters to load, it takes awhile. Especially the MK buses, as they are always most crowded, and I would have to wait and then be squashed and standing room only.

The door opened by housekeeping is becoming more and more common! I saw this at AKL once, when I walked by I saw a door held open by the deadbolt, without a soul in sight. I could have waltzed right in! And you are 100% right, housekeeping will keep doors open since it makes their job convienent, and it isn't their stuff that would be stolen! No one cares but you! :(

I also had a fridge with no temperature control - I guess it was intentionally removed. My fridge was ever worse as it had no knob on the wooden door to open the cabinet easily. Think that would be easy to fix!

I just stayed at POP and found it far better than POR! The buses were more direct with only one bus stop, and not as far to walk to everything. Thanks for such a detailed report!

I'm glad your trip was good overall. We stayed at POR for one night during the time you were there and I have to say I didn't have any problems with the bed, our room was clean though I didn't look under the bed and I agree the grounds are beautiful, just too big for us. The bus situation certainly does stink though. We got a bus going to MK on Saturday afternoon without a problem but coming home was horrendous. POFQ got 3 busses while we'd only had one, and at that point we were lined up outside of the queing area because the line was so big. If we weren't so tired we would have jumped on the POFQ bus and walked back to POR. They finally did send about 3 busses in a row to get almost everyone out of there but it shoudn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that POR is a huge resort and when it's full they need to get more busses there around closing time.

We were at POR Alligator Bayou Nov. 19-26. Mouskeeping and bus service were not as good as 2004. Every night we would return to find the window blinds wide open and every light on exposing any personal possessions to the world. Bus service to parks was "okay" BUT busses back to POR from parks were few and far between and sometimes you shared with French Quarter and sometimes not.

I just returned from POR on Tuesday, and although I didn't have as many problems as you, there are still some! But I also had the same problems at the FQ in Oct. Seems housekeeping is lagging at both resorts, some days the rooms do not even get cleaned til late in the day, one day it was going on 3pm so I called, and when they do "clean" it looks like it is thrown together, on this last trip I had been at the pool and returned to still find my room not done, and I had to be in EPCOT at a certain time, I saw the housekeeper and told her, she went in and was out in 5 MINUTES!!!! just threw the bed together picked up the old towels put in some new and out she went!! And I always left a tip! Well I didn't on the last day, was just tired of the apathy I guess. This was also a problem at the FQ in Oct. I did write a letter to Disney and they called me, but nothing else.
Another problem with POR is they should as you stated tell you there are no pool towels at the quiet pools, I found this out and had to raid a cart!

I did find something odd though that has never happened to me before.......on my first day, I was getting out of the shower and someone knocked, now I know it is not housekeeping since I haven't even spent a night yet...........it was a manager wanting to know if things were in order upon my check in???? although she never did return on other days other wise I could have filled her in.
I did housekeeping in a resort area growing up and when I wrote Disney I told them, that they really should have knob hangers telling the maids that the room needs cleaning, that wat housekeeping knows the room is empty, these rooms should be done along with the checkouts.
I will also agree with you on another point the customer service in the food court.........I have to agree that most of them in there are lacking in customer service skills, but for the most part and perhaps I am wrong I think it is a language barrier problem.
Also be glad you did not get AB, I too wanted to stay there since I never have, but once I found out that is where most of the cheerleaders were for this week I was glad to have the mansions.
Will I stay at POR again, probably but only if I can't get the FQ. and even at that it will be only if I can't get the WL!! I love the grounds of the resort and it has a great trail to walk/run each morning, I don't use the busses so that is not an issue for me.

Just wanted to let you know, we had the same issues at POFQ with both Mousekeeping and the missing knob on the fridge temp control (ours was not cold enough)

I sent an email to Disney and got a reply concerning the housekeeping issues, including a contact name and number (I'll be calling her back next week).

DH fixed the fridge problem with my tweezers :teeth:

(We were at POFQ Nov 12-19)

Hope the rest of your trip was magical :goodvibes

Hi, Thanks for all the responses. It does help to know that others have experienced some of the same issues at POR and POFQ.

Actually, about a month ago, I had booked POFQ for two nights only for this coming March (pre-cruise stay). After my stay at POR, I was toying with the idea of upgrading to a different resort (got the AP rate), but I am going to stay put. POFQ is smaller with a better bus situation, but the biggest reason is that March is peak season and I will not pay the whopping deluxe prices for only two nights. If it was longer, maybe I would as I am dying to try WL & possibly AKL.

Oh, another very nice thing that happened while at POR. Our stay at POR started on Nov 26 (regular season) and the rest of our stay Nov 27-Dec 4 was during value season. To save a bundle, I made two separate reservations, meaning I had to check out of POR after our first night and check back in. I was hoping to be able to stay in the same room. Not only did I not have to move to a new room, I didn't even have to go to the front desk to handle any of it. I received a message in my room from the front desk telling me I can arrange for someone to come to my room in the morning and deliver our new KTTW cards! I was thrilled. So I called right away that same night and left a message. The next morning (the earliest is 8:30 am that they will come to your room), a very nice cast member handled the whole thing right in our room and minutes later, we were off to the parks. :smooth:

I don't know about any of you but I'd be tempted to save the door hanger as a souveigner :o

We must have been at MK the same night. We noticed that the FQ getting buses too. That was frustrating!!!

I think I was there that same Saturday evening as well. We watched 3 buses arrive to pick up guests at MK on their way to POFQ , while the line at POR kept growing and growing and you crossed your fingers you'd get a seat when the buses finally do show up. I felt badly for the young parents with little ones. I hope the rumors I heard about a bus system rehaul are true.

I am beginning to wonder if some bus drivers mix up POFQ and POR!! In October, I was leaving MK and stood in a huge line at POR. Finally got on the third bus to come. After lots of time for everyone to get on and was packed to the max, we finally leave. Guess What? The bus driver skips the POR entrance and takes all of us to POFQ!! When he pulls up to the bus stop, he opens the door and was surprised not a soul on the packed bus tries to get off. We all are tired and squashed, and we all YELL that this is the WRONG stop!! He finally gets the message and takes us to POR. But either he had no idea that POFQ had their own stop, or he didn't know that POFQ was not POR! So maybe many bus drivers just don't know enough about POR/POFQ or something! :confused3
