We enjoyed both.....
When we were at mansions, I had my mother with me and it was perfect with her. The rooms are more victorian and feminine feeling, with the pristine buildings, gardens and formal pools. We asked for 2nd floor so we would have a "view" as we always had requested water view. Nice corner rooms, it was "lovely".
When we stayed bayou, I was with my husband. We requested first floor water view and we faced the pool. We (and the kids) love the bogs, croaking frogs, bridges, rustic decor and landscaping, the feel of a front porch, taking a quick swimin the freeform pool just outside our room (although the pool was somewhat hidden by landscaping) and the quaintness.
I think they are equally enjoyable depending on your group. For you and your son I think the bayou would be more fun !
