POP and MNSSHP Oct 08 + BONUS Weekend at WL in Dec -*2/20 Update - The End!*

Ever since I saw the Candlelight Processional last year, I knew I’d have to bring my parents this year to see it. I just knew they would enjoy it and they hadn’t been to WDW in December for a while and always enjoyed the decorations. Since we would be sharing a room we decided to book a deluxe for the weekend. We got a great AP rate at Wilderness Lodge. I had never even stepped foot in this resort before and had heard it was just gorgeous at Christmas so I was excited to try something new.

We were only going for a weekend – leaving on Friday and coming home on Sunday. To make the most of our time I decided to take Sam out of school early on that Friday so we could be at WDW early enough to have a nice dinner and enjoy the resort amenities.

So, I picked Sam up from school at 11 am and she was beyond excited. We went to my parent’s house where we would leave my car since dad was going to drive. We were on the road at 11:30 and were pulling in to Wilderness Lodge at 2:00 – we made great time! (My dad has a bit of a lead foot that I’ve inherited.)

We were all amazed by the resort just by driving up to it. Beautiful! We walked in the lobby and were blown away by the gorgeous theme and Christmas decorations. There was a really pretty and huge tree in the center of the lobby and decorations and lights throughout. Pictures don’t do it justice. I can’t imagine what this resort would look like without all these decorations – they just seem to fit right in.

My pictures don't do this place justice - it is really breathtaking:

I went to check us in but our room wasn’t ready so we decided to explore the resort and grounds. Inside we found many little nooks and crannies that looked like perfect spots to curl up with a good book or just to sit and relax. We walked around outside for a bit and were able to see the geyser erupt. The few of the lake outside is so peaceful – something about being on the water. Very nice.

After walking around for a bit both inside and outside I went to check on our room. The CM told me that it still wasn’t ready but that if I wanted a different room we could get in now. Um, ok – why not? We hadn’t booked any sort of special view room or anything so I’m not sure what that was all about. We wanted to get our luggage to our room and get ready for dinner so off we went.

Our door:

Surprise on our bed:
100_0216.jpg

There were animals carved in to each bedpost - I thought that was so neat:

Sam found a not so hidden Mickey in the hallway:
100_0222.jpg

The room was very nice. Very similar to the rooms at AKL (I understand the architect was the same for the two resorts). We hung out for a bit and Sam and I unpacked (of course!) Then we went back in the lobby for a bit to hang out before our reservations at Whispering Canyon Café.

Sam and I went to the gift shop and bought a dog toy for Jenny for Christmas and she used her money to buy a Marie kitty art set. Then we went to the pin cart in the lobby and bought a couple of pins. The lady working at the pin cart was an older lady who reminded us of my MIL. She was very sweet and gave Sam a Year of a Million Dreams Pixie Dust pin which made Sam’s night.

At 5:00 I went to WCC to check us in for dinner. We were seated a few minutes later. We were sat in the farthest section from the entrance – sort of separated from the “main” part of the restaurant where there were maybe six tables. I think this worked out well since I’ve heard the noise can get kind of loud in the main part of the restaurant and it was much more crowded in that main section. We had a great waiter who was from NJ (where my parents and I are from) so they talked a bit about that.

100_0206.jpg

At WCC you can get a milkshake (bottomless) as your drink on the Disney Dining Plan. I thought about it but knew I wanted dessert and would be way too full if I had a milkshake also. Sam got the milkshake though – I think she got an orange cream flavor.

My dad ordered the ribs, mom had the prime rib and I ordered that canyon skillet that I heard so many good reports on. I wasn’t interested in everything on there but I figured we could share as I wanted to taste my mom’s prime rib as well. Everyone really enjoyed there food and we all agreed that the beef brisket on the skillet was the best of all! Yum!

For dessert I had the Apple Caramel Pie which was delicious! My mom had some kind of pecan pie that was really good too. Dad had cheesecake (plain) that he also enjoyed.

Sam didn’t really participate in any of the activities for the kids (pony races and napkin twirling) but she did enjoy watching. She is funny that way, sometimes she’ll get up and do it and other times she is just as happy to sit back and watch. If she was there with a friend she would have participated for sure. All in all this was a great meal and we would all eat here again

While we were waiting for our food I wanted to show my parents some of the things we had bought. I reached down for the bag and couldn’t find it! The pins were in with the bag from the gift shop and it was nowhere to be found.:scared1: Sam had the bag when sitting in the lobby and she had grandpa help her open her craft set. I was guessing they had left it sitting there in the lobby so I went out to look but no luck. I went to the concierge desk to see if it had been turned in but no luck there either. The CM suggested I try back after dinner.

Sam was not happy about this lost bag at all! She was mostly upset about the pin the CM had given her at the pin cart of all things. I gave her the lecture that she needed to be more responsible for things if she was going to carry the bag. That didn’t help.

We went back to the concierge after dinner and again – nothing. The CM this time suggested I check with the other stores and restaurants in the lobby to see if it had been turned in there. We decided to go back to our friend at the pin cart first. The CM was very nice and asking us what pins we had bought. She then said she would contact her manager to see if there was anything she could do. The manager came down (I don’t know if she was looking to get us new pins or what) and asked what exactly we were missing. It was then that I looked down behind the pin cart on the CM’s stack of stuff and saw our bag (or what looked like our bag) there! I pointed it out to the CM and she said “Oh yeah – I saw someone left that over there on the chair – do you think it is yours?” We looked inside and yes indeed, it was our bag. We were super thankful to the pin cart lady (and the manager who was a little perplexed) but couldn’t figure out why she didn’t mention the bag before? Didn’t matter – we were pleased to have our things back. The lady remembered us every time we passed her cart during the weekend and would always wave.

We sat in the lobby for a bit and watched a handbell choir perform which was very cool. Then Sam, my mom and I decided to take a boat ride over to the Contemporary to walk around for a bit. My dad opted to go back to the room and rest.

Bad picture of handbell choir:
100_0226.jpg

It was a bit cold that night on the water but such a pretty boat ride in the evening. We got off at the Contemporary and walked around in the shops for a bit. I just love this resort so it was nice to spend some time there.

My favorite resort:

This came out too dark but I love these ears:
100_0238.jpg

We finished our shopping and hopped a boat back to WL – it was really cold now! We went upstairs to get a blanket and then went down to the beach to watch the Electrical Water Pageant! Sam decided to stay in the room with Grandpa as she was tired and cold. I love this show so much – just reminds me of watching it as a kid and I love the music. I get teary eyed every time. I was hoping Sam would be able to watch it the next night with me as she had never seen it.

Up next – My first Mousefest and Candlelight Processional

Yay for an update! I love seeing all the decor!

And might I add I am so jealous you live just a couple hours away!

:goodvibes Yay! Great update Michelle! I loved that Wilderness Lodge tree when we saw it last year. So gorgeous! Whispering Canyon was a hit with us last year as well - did you see as much of the "antics" if you were sitting in the other room? I have heard that you miss some stuff. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded. Our kids pretty much did the hokey pokey and the ketchup thing, and that was it. They loved it though - I just thought it was almost too loud since the girl on the microphone was right next to us! :scared1:

That is very strange about the pin cart CM. Seems very odd that she would not have immediately put it together that that was your bag. WTH? :confused3

Love the Mickey Ears pic of you and Sam - it's so cute! I have never seen the EWP from start to finish, but I have caught bits and pieces of it and I would love to see it in its entirety one day! Can't wait to hear about your next day! :goodvibes

Yay. Love the pic of you guys in the Mickey ears. That's so cute. I'm glad you found your bag. You would have started thinking that you were cursed if you lost something else at Disney! I would love to stay at Wilderness Lodge. So pretty. What a goofball Sam trying on all the hats. Who does that?!!:rolleyes1 :lmao:

Love the pictures for the Wilderness Lodge! Can't wait to see your adventures at Mousefest!

Love the latest update. Wilderness Lodge is gorgeous at Christmas time! It's one of my favorite resorts. Do you guys plan to visit in August? We're going for 12 nights. Maybe we'll see ya then. :goodvibes

I just spent the better part of my morning reading your TR. I have read one of your past trip reports and really enjoyed it. It was very nice of you to make the font color and size different for the updates. It takes too long to read all comments if I start a TR that has been going on for months:rotfl: , but do love all the comments and replies though.

I am so sorry you lost your camera, I would be heartbroken. You were very fortunate to have done photopass. You have many good pictures. Esp loved the one in front of HM with the ghost. How did I miss that, I have been to MNSSHP many times. Including 10/19/08! MK was so empty on Sunday because EVERYONE went to MNSSHP that night. I have never been to such a crowded party. We still had fun, and I also loved the Headless Horseman.

We were at Epcot in the World Showcase on the night of the 17th. We saw some private party, near Italy that was watching Illuminations, a couple of Bridal couples were there. Did you see that too?

Sam is so cute in her costume, she is brave to go on all those roller coasters. It should be fun to continue to experience the rides with her as she grows up.

I truly enjoy having a car to get around at WDW. That would have drove me crazy with the POP/DTD/POP situation. I even drive to MK. It does get me on the monorail.:rotfl:

I am looking forward to your mini TR on the WL and Candlelight Processional. Don't you just love Disney at Christmas?:santa:

Sam is one lucky girl...getting picked up from school and then getting to go to Disney World.

We ate at the WCC on our trip. I totally agree about the WL in general...it is such an amazing resort! I think that the VWL are next up on my list of DVC resorts to stay at along with the Boardwalk. My sister and I took a ton of pictures there it was so pretty. :goodvibes

I am glad you found your bag too! But that is strange the CM didn't say anything about it. :confused3

Another great update Michelle!

I love reading about WDW in December because I have never been but I am dying to go...maybe this year!

Thank goodness about the bag...not as bad as a camera, but still would have been not the best way to start the 1st nite of the trip.

I am sure your parents are going to love the Candlelight Processional....can't wait to read more!:goodvibes

great update and pics.

glad you found the bag.

Yay for an update! I love seeing all the decor!

Thanks Julia! Christmas at WDW is so pretty!
I am very thankful I live as close as I do to WDW. I keep telling myself I have to take advantage as I might not always be so close!

Hey Sara! At WCC, a waitress came in to tell us they were starting the kids activities in case anyone back there wanted to join. Sam and I went to watch but that was it. I think it was nice to be a bit separated from the main room. We didn't really have any of the usual "antics" at our table.

I think the pin cart lady was just a bit absent-minded. Very sweet lady though.

You will have to see the EWP for sure someday! It is one of my favorite things!

Thanks Monica! I have a friend who gets a picture every trip of his family in those ears. It is neat to see the changes in the family - first it was just the two of them, then one kid and now two. Really cute.

I can't imagine where Sam gets the idea to try on so many hats - I can't imagine doing something like that! :rotfl2:

Love the pictures for the Wilderness Lodge! Can't wait to see your adventures at Mousefest!

Hi Lynn! Mousefest adventures coming right up - and your cameo! :)

Love the latest update. Wilderness Lodge is gorgeous at Christmas time! It's one of my favorite resorts. Do you guys plan to visit in August? We're going for 12 nights. Maybe we'll see ya then. :goodvibes

Thanks Tammy! We don't have any plans to go in August but you never know! I just canceled a trip we had planned for March (a weekend) so I may "need" another trip by then!

Thanks so much for all the nice comments! Isn't MNSSHP the best! I really love it!
I didn't see the bridal parties at Illuminations that night (we were on the other side of the lake) but in December on our girls trip we saw a few different dessert parties going on. Looked like a lot of fun!
Thanks for reading! :)

I keep telling Sam how spoiled she is to go to Disney as often as she does - I don't think she knows any different. I have totally brainwashed her!

I was really impressed with WL - much more than I thought I would be. Just beautiful! I bet the villas are great!

Another great update Michelle!

Thanks! You should definitely make a point to try and get to WDW in December sometime - it is truly beautiful! I think you should visit WDW in all four season sometime in your life! :rotfl:

Michelle, another great installment as always. Again I am so sorry about your camera. :sad1:

Thanks for reading! The camera thing seems so long ago now. I'm glad to have the little bit of pictures I do from this trip. :goodvibes

great update and pics.
glad you found the bag.

Thanks Scott! :)

Today was going to be an Epcot day. We had booked the CP dinner package with an early dinner/late lunch at Chefs de France. That restaurant wasn’t my first choice (or second or third) but it was all that was available when I booked. We hadn’t been there before so I was looking forward to trying something new.

Here is my mom and Sam getting ready to leave the room:
100_0243.jpg

100_0245.jpg

I don’t remember what time we got to Epcot but it was not too long after park opening. We split up – I went to get us fast passes for Soarin’ while my dad and Sam went to ride Test Track. My mom isn’t a big Test Track fan so she just sat and people watched. I met them back over in the Test Track area and we spent some time looking at the cars and through the store.

Sam found the car she wants:
100_0248.jpg

This was the day of the Mousefest 2008 Mega Mouse Meet. Now, when we booked this trip originally I didn’t know anything about Mousefest. Mousefest is basically a convention of Disney fans from all over the world. I think there were close to 1000 people registered this year. I figured since we would be there that weekend that Samantha and I would register and see what it was all about. We planned to visit the Mega Mouse Meet and a Be Our Guest Podcast meet on Sunday morning. There were so many meets planned throughout the weekend that we could have done many more if we had planned better.

Now back to our morning. I think it was around 9:30 am now and Sam and I decided we wanted to head over to the Mega Mouse Meet to check it out. My parents would entertain themselves in Epcot for a while and we planned to meet back at Soarin’ later to use our fast passes.

The Mega Mouse Meet was held in one of the ballrooms at Yacht Club. Sam and I took a leisurely stroll over there through the International Gateway. What a pretty walk! We took our time and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the area.

A few pictures along our walk:
100_0249.jpg

100_0250.jpg

Sam was working on a bird project for school so she had to take this pic:
100_0251.jpg

100_0252.jpg

100_0253.jpg

We got to the ballroom and oh my goodness! I was impressed. It was a big room filled with tables of all different Disney related things. There were authors with their Disney books, all different Disney websites (including our favorite DISboards, podcasters, travel companies and much much more. When you first enter the room they give you big bags to collect all the loot from the tables. I think every table had something they were handing out – pins, magnets, lanyards, etc. And quite a few tables had games you could play to win other things. One table gave Sam a really cute Minnie Mouse stuffed animal – she was very excited! I bought a couple of books and we just made our way around the room. They also had food and drinks set out for us.

100_0255.jpg

100_0256.jpg

While walking around the room I saw someone that looked familiar standing near me. It was Lynn (nts4wdw)! I knew she and her husband Chuck were going to be at WDW for Mousefest but had no idea I’d actually see someone I “knew”! I introduced myself and I think she recognized Samantha right away from my trip reports. We talked for a few minutes and got a picture together. Fun!

We made a couple rounds of the room and decided it was time to head back to Epcot. Sam and I both agreed that we were glad we went to the Mega Mouse Meet and would do it again. It was really neat to be around so many like-minded Disney lovers, all in one room!

Sam with her bag of Mousefest loot!
100_0257.jpg

We met my parents out in front of Soarin’ as it was time for our flight over California. We had a great ride as usual. After the ride we decided to get a snack. I had a pretzel and Sam got a pizza. I knew she probably wouldn’t eat much in France so she needed something substantial now.

After our snack we took my dad to Club Cool where he had never been. Of course we had to have him try our favorite Beverly!

100_0259.jpg

We decided to split up again and meet at Chefs de France for our reservation. Sam was getting tired and I thought we’d take a leisurely ride on Ellen’s Energy Adventure so she could sit for a while. My parents were going to explore Innoventions for a while. Ellen’s Energy Adventure isn’t my favorite ride but Sam had never ridden and I knew it was a nice long ride where she could relax a bit. But, when we got there the line was too long and we didn’t want to risk missing our dinner reservation. So, we rode Figment and Living with the Land instead. Two of our favorites at Epcot!

100_0261.jpg

100_0262.jpg

100_0265.jpg

It was finally time for our lunch/dinner at Chefs de France. I wasn’t sure what to expect here but it was actually pretty good. My dad had the burger (real authentic there!) and my mom and I had the ham & cheese sandwich. I can’t remember what we had for dessert but I remember not being too impressed.

100_0266.jpg

When we were finished eating I told my parents that we should probably head over to line up for the Candlelight Processional. It was about 4:30 and we were scheduled for the 5:30 show. I know last year the line got really long really quick. My mom wanted to go see the France movie so Sam and I went to get in line and save them a spot.

We were lined up right across from Japan and the drummers were out playing – I love them! We actually had a nice time waiting in line. Sam sat on a little bench across from us drawing with some of the paper and pens from Mousefest. I started talking to a nice family behind us. They were also from Florida (Tampa) and traveled to WDW as often as possible. It really made the time pass while talking Disney with other Disney fans. Before long a CM came by telling us they were getting ready to let us in. I called my mom but no answer so I left a message. Just as they started letting us in my parents walked up – phew! Great timing!

Our narrator for the Candlelight Processional was Monique Coleman. She played Taylor in the High School Musical movies (among other things). Sam was excited to see someone she “knew”. I thought Sam enjoyed the CP last year but now she tells me she was bored. And she was bored again this year. Oh well, I guess I would have been bored at that age also.

I have to say that I just love the Candlelight Processional! I can’t believe I hadn’t even heard of it until last year. I love the music, the orchestra, the singing – all of it! I would love to be involved in a production like this if I had any ounce of musical talent! I think my favorite part is the guys who come out with the long trumpets (I’m sure there is a more proper name). We were seated fairly close to where they played and it was really loud. Sam covered her ears but I loved being that close! We all really enjoyed the CP (well, except for maybe Sam who said it was just ok). My parents were impressed with it and it was so nice to experience something at WDW telling the Christmas story. I will for sure see this anytime I am at WDW during December.

100_0270.jpg

We decided to work our way out of the park. We had contemplated staying for Illuminations but my parents had seen it in October with us and everyone was getting a bit tired. We stopped to ride Test Track once more (me, Sam and dad). Then we went to Mouse Gears to look around a little – can’t remember if we bought anything or not.

We got back to Wilderness Lodge just in time to watch the Electrical Water Pageant. Sam and I went upstairs to get a blanket as it was really cold this night. We went down and sat in a lounge chair on the beach and enjoyed the awesome show. I’m glad Sam got a chance to see it and she seemed to enjoy it.

Next up – Magic Kingdom and BOGP meet

Hey Michelle - another great update!

Glad your parents liked the CP and that Sam got to see the ELP.

Funny you should say that Sam was a bit bored by the CP. My kids are a couple yrs younger than Sam and I have a hunch they wld have been bored as well. In fact, I even called in and my voicemail was played on the Disunplugged Christmas in July series asking this very question. (For the record, the answer was that it should be equally appealing to kids. But none of the members of the Dis Unplugged had kids at the time - this was the pre-Teresa days). You are the first person I have heard comment on a kids' perspective of the CP and I appreciate your comments. I think I wld try to wait until the kids are at least 8 or so before taking them.;)

As usual, can't wait to read more! :goodvibes

PS - in the foreground of the pic of the ELP, it actually looks like Snow! I know it is obviously not that! What is it? Foaming water from a hot tub or fountain???:confused3

Another fun update! The Mega Mouse Meet sounds like fun.

The Candlelight Processional is so cool. I think it would be fun to be in it...if only I could sing! haha

Great update, I love the pictures, Sam is just adorable. The mousefest stuff looked like fun. I need to tell Scott that as admin of Enchanted we both need to be there next year :lmao:, isn't that a good excuse to go back to Disney?

Great update Michelle! Sam is so cute. The Mousefest meet sounds like so much fun! I agree that it would be nice to be in a room with a bunch of Disney freaks! :rotfl: Make us all feel a lot more normal! :rotfl2:

The pictures are great! I loved the CP last year! Just so moving and beautiful! I really enjoyed the earliest show too - it was nice for it to be getting dark as the show went on. It seemed to make the whole thing come to life even more! :goodvibes

Can't wait to hear about your next day!

Sara

Hi everyone! I want to apologize for ignoring my TR the last couple of weeks. I have been swamped with work and haven't had the time to DIS. :sad2: We are going back to WDW this weekend for a quick trip. I'd like to finish this before then but I'm not sure it will happen. If not, I promise to finish next week when we return. Thanks for sticking with me!

Thanks! I seem to remember that last year she enjoyed the CP a little bit more. Or maybe she just wasn't vocal about being bored! I will still see it anytime I'm in WDW during December though - I think it is fabulous!

PS - in the foreground of the pic of the ELP, it actually looks like Snow! I know it is obviously not that! What is it? Foaming water from a hot tub or fountain???:confused3

It does look like snow or foaming water doesn't it? It is actually the sand on the beach at WL against the wall that holds the lake back.

Another fun update! The Mega Mouse Meet sounds like fun.

LOL - I totally agree. I'd love to sing or play in the orchestra at CP - if I only had talent. :)

The pictures are great! I loved the CP last year! Just so moving and beautiful! I really enjoyed the earliest show too - it was nice for it to be getting dark as the show went on. It seemed to make the whole thing come to life even more! :goodvibes
Can't wait to hear about your next day!
Sara
