Latest Vacation Magazine (p.17) has an artist's sketch of the pool slide to be added at OKW. It is 32 ft high and the slide itself is 100 ft long. It looks like the design of the slide is intended to resemble a castle. Considering that this new structure will be right next to the Caribbean themed Hospitality House I wonder how it will fit in?
A castle in the Caribbean? Has anyone seen a larger plan when they attended the annual meeting? l am looking for thoughts on how it will all look when it is done this fall.

I think the "sand castle" fits in very well with the sand castle play area already at OKW. Very appropriate for the OKW beach theme.

It's a sand-castle

I think the final appearance and whether it "fits" will depend two things:

The surrounding landscaping. They will need to buffer it with trees to control the view. If it towers over the buildings it will look awkward. A sandcastle is not taller than a beach house. (Disney is usually very good at this.)

The surface. If it looks like the masses of concrete at Blizzard Beach then it will look cheap and BAD. It will need a coral/shell, "conch" surface. Not white and shiny.

IMHO:tilt:

I think it looks fab. If there is even half the detail in it as in the drawing shown in VM, I think it will be a job well done.

The whole sand castle idea fits right into the play ground that has been there for years. Many things are built at the playground that look like they are made of sand. It is not castle but a sand castle, big difference.

We have been to the main OKW pool only once in the 5 or 6 times we have been there (and it rained as soon as we sat down). So we just hope it isn't too ugly. If it draws people away from Turtle Pond or South Pointe pools, I am happy.

I know they are similar but the theme of the Hospitality House is "Key West". ;)

Taken on its own, the slide may not make sense. However, if you have seen the play area at the main pool, the slide is ideal. My understanding is that is where the slide will be located. It will go with the other sand castle and the giant pail and shovel that are already there.

The shape of the pool sort of curves over to that area. I think if you are over by Olivia's/HH you will still be seeing primarily the lighthouse, dolphins, etc. When you turn to the left the sandcastle will be in the section with the other sandcastle.

I recently rode the boat from OKW to DTD and the impression I got from the driver was that some rennovations were also going to be done to the area that serves the snacks and rents out the bikes there. It was going to be more than just building the slide. But, that is only a rumor.

I think that because it is going to be over near the play area, where there are othe rhtings that look like sandcastles, that it will work just fine. They may need to do some re-landscaping and plant a few takker trees to hide it a little from the view near HH, but I think it'll fit into the "theme" of the pool area nicely.

Some of the drawings give this impression.

It makes sense that the whole area would need to be re-worked a bit. We could use a new building for those things anyway!::yes::

All I know is that I can't wait to see it when all is said and done. I can imagine it will fit in with the other sandcastles that are built in the kiddie area. I hope they don't tweak Turtle Crawl too much (if that is what they are going to do).

I wonder if Richyams will use the new slide??????

I must have a lot more faith in Disney then others do, because I do not have a doubt that the pool rehab and slide addition is going to be very nice and will blend perfectly with the atmosphere of OKW. Everything Disney does to their resorts is always very heavily tied to the theming of the resort. True some of the theming can be a little bizarre like the huge icons, etc at the value resorts but they still fit perfectly in with the theming of the resorts. I am sure OKW will not be an exception. The atmosphere of OKW is of a pretty, laid back Florida community and I am sure Disney will preserve and even enhance this theming with the rehab/remodeling. Rehab of the marina and snack bar will also be very nice. I hope they also enlarge the Gurgling Suitcase. This is a very nice place to sit and have a drink, especially when the sun is setting--but it is very small. I love their Mudslides--Yummmmmmm! :)

It will look great and funny to hear all the people saying how nicely it will blend in with the sand castle landscape after everyone was so critical of the slide idea when it was in the planning stages earlier on. I think no matter what it looks like it is going to be a great addition to an otherwise plain boring pool. I know that Disney won't dissapoint when it comes to the looks of the slid and the theme of the pol area they are generally really good at maing things look good together.

Two words: Pop Century
True Pop Century is a little bizarre and loud, BUT everything fits perfectly with the theming of the resort. I have stayed at PC and although it is far cry away from many of my favorite WDW resorts--it is still very unique and it follows the intended theming down to the slightest detail. One of the most interesting things I found at PC was the artifacts and memorabilia on display in the lobby dating back over the various eras--amazing!
PC may not appeal to you or I, but it does to many. As with ALL WDW resorts, what some find appealing, many others do not.

I think it looks really cool, I know my kids will want to stay there after it's done.

The sand caslte idea fit in. Remember there is a big sand pail and shovel back in the kiddie area.
