We are wanting to stay at the Polynesian resort the last week of January. We were looking at some of the moderates and haven't made a decision, but would really like to stay there with this probably being our last trip with kids. They are 7 and 9. I know they normally offer a pretty good deal that time of tree year. Any advice.

Split your stay? Do some nights at Poly and some at a moderate?
Some travel agencies book blocks of rooms and can offer a hefty discount.
Look into renting points for a DVC studio?
When Disney discounts come out sometimes you can go through Orbitz and get a secondary discount as well.

Don't get caught up in the 'Poly' thing. It's truly not worth the financial stress

Book a room only reservation through cheaptickets or orbitz. They will offer the same room price as disney but then you can stack with a code from them. If you use ebates then shop through them for some additional cash back on your stay.

Poly is a lovely property...if you can get the discount right then go for it!

If you are flexible on your dates you can get good deals at the Poly. We stayed there for less than $200 per night last August.

Look into renting DVC points. We were hoping to do that for our upcoming trip but I waited to long and it is booked up. But it was less than half to rent DVC versus booking directly from Disney for the exact same room.

You can rent DVC for a week at the end of January for about $1652 or $236 a night....

Can you get dining with this
Depends on who you book through. Only the DVC member can book the dining plan for you through DVC member services. I believe David's DVC rentals offers this option but I'm not sure about his competitors (I think the timeshare store does not). A private rental would be up to that individual DVC owner. Keep in mind that unlike Disney direct whenever a member books this (even if it is several months in advance) it must be paid in full immediately so they will (likely) require prepayment from you when they book it. Not sure if David's lets you add it after the fact or if you must book it when you make your reservation.
Also keep in mind DVC rentals through brokers are not able to be changed/cancelled after they are made (private rentals would depend on the owner and their rental contract) so I'd consider trip insurance.

Something else to consider when renting DVC points is that the owner is always in control of your reservation. That's true even if you go through one of the brokers. The only thing that using a broker does is give you a guarantee that you won't lose the money you paid if the owner cancels your reservation.

There were posts on the DVC board a month ago from two different renters who had gone through a broker recommended by the disboards. Their rental were each for hard-to-get reservations (BWV during F&W). Both reservations got magically canceled by DVC (it's been speculated that the owner was in arrears on his dues) and could not be re-booked. The best that the broker offered to do was to get another DVC resort (far removed from the F&W Festival and for more money) or give a full refund to the client. At least if Disney had to change your reservation to another room type or resort, they will upgrade you to something even better AND they won't charge you a cent more for it.

In the several times we rented points our owners were happy to book the dp for us if we chose to. That also has to be paid in full at time of booking. The first time we were clueless and added it on at the last minute so we had no choice but to give the owner our cc # or give up the dp.
Then we learned to just buy a Disney GC so we could give that to an owner instead of our cc. Either way is a risk I suppose but all of our experiences were positive ones.
