I'm just curious why you are a vegetarian. I'm not a big meat eater. The thought of what I'm eating really bothers me, so if I'm eating meat, I try not to think about it. I much prefer veggies and grains, anyway.

Hey Liberty!! :goodvibes

Growing up on a beef farm made gave me the insight into where my food came from. I became a vegetarian more than 20 years ago, when I grew up and left home. As you can imagine, being a vegetarian was was more difficult in our little home town!!

I was just thinking of that Barb! That must have been difficult.

Hi Liberty Belle!

I became a vegetarian as a freshman in college 10 years ago due to the truly horrifying conditions and treatment of animals.

About 5 years ago, I went back to being an omnivore because I met my husband, who is an omnivore, and it was much easier to cook for both of us and not have special needs at his family's house, etc.

Just recently, I returned to being a vegetarian. I read (well, tried to read) a book called Slaughterhouse along with several other eye-opening books. I feel as though I personally cannot continue to contribute the industry.

I'm also trying to lose baby weight after having my DC, so I read the book Skinny B*tch and that was also really revealing about the way meat and dairy packs the weight on and is pretty unhealthy in general. I hate dieting but vegetarianism always came pretty easily to me and I never go hungry.

In addition, I try to care about the environment and it's much more environmentally sound to eat a plant-based diet for many reasons.

So for me, it works really well because it helps me feel good about my choices for animals and the environment and also helps me feel great about myself, as I'm in a size 6 again for the first time in 5 years.

My DH loves all types of food so basically I cook vegetarian dinners each night and he eats meat when we're at restaurants or at a family member's home. I'm lucky that he is flexible and that this works for us. He also agrees with my choice to raise our children as vegetarians which is awesome.:thumbsup2

started as a moral thing, but then I tried to go back to meat, and the texture gags me so bad. I do eat meat once in a great while - I am a sucker for bacon and shredded beef. But 95% of my diet is pescatarian.

I also do not eat dairy products and that was a much harder group of foods to give up.

But I really do not want animals to be kept in work camps so that I can eat cheese:headache:.

And now that it has been a couple of years since I have eaten dairy, the smell of cheese seems really vile to me.

It is really difficult to eat out (unless it is a vegan place, and luckily in my area there are a few), but I feel it is worth it.

Ironically my husband is a meat eater:confused3...I love him anyway, and respect that everyone needs to make these kinds of choices for themselves!

I do it strictly for health reasons. I love animals but they never factored into my decision to stop eating meat, dairy and eggs.

I had many different reasons that happened over time.

"The thought of what I'm eating really bothers me, so if I'm eating meat, I try not to think about it."

That's how it started. As soon as I really thought about what/who I was eating, I couldn't do it anymore for various reasons, and finally all meat was out of my diet.

And there were other steps along the way.

We became vegetarians as our way of practicing one of the fundamental principles of our faith. Since then, our intention has been solidified further for some of the same reasons as epcotprincess: The horrific treatment of animals (beef, lamb, pork, poultry, and especially fish) raised for meat in this country; and to some extent also the environmental impact.

I have never been a big fan of meat. After having DS it took forever to loose the baby weight, so I decided to become a vegetarian for awhile. That was over a year ago and I am still going strong. I love how versatile veggies and beans are. I have tried meat a few times and it just taste gross to me.
