"I deeply resent the destruction of federalism represented by Hillary Clinton's willingness to go into a state she doesn't even live in and pretend to represent people there. So I certainly wouldn't imitate her." - Maryland Resident Alan Keyes in March of 2000 to Fox News

This is the guy that the GOP thinks is going to beat Barack Obama in Illinois ?

:rotfl:

Now Keyes is trying to say that Obama is a-skeered of him, since Barack said that he would not stand by an agreement he'd made with one of the many previous GOP nominees to hold a total of 6 debates. The reason, simply that there's no time, since three were to be held this month alone.

But Barack actually said it best...His response, when asked about Keyes "bawkbawkbawk" argument: "That was a special for in-state residents," Obama quipped.

Keyes is currently polling roughly 40 points behind Obama in Illinois (though he may be doing better in his home state of Maryland  )

I tend to agree with Keyes... or at least the Keyes of March 2000 ;)

I listened to Keyes on NPR on my way home from work yesterday. So much spin coming from him I darn near had to pull off to the side of the road from dizzyness! :p

For what it's worth, so do I...I would think that something as important as running for congress could at least be treated the same as college residency restrictions. Make 'em live there for a period before they can run. I don't hink Hillary knew much about the people of New York and I'm certain that Keyes knows even less about Illinois.

Well, for what it's worth, I don't think he has a prayer of winning. Not sure why he agreed to challenge. As they say, he made is bed...

Nothing new to add to what's already been said, but I think Keyes is going to realize he's a sacrificial lamb. Osama had a sizeable lead against his previous opponent. Keyes isn't going to be able to make up the difference.

I'm voting for Keyes.

He knows he doesn't have a prayer. If you would have listened to his acceptance speech you would know that he is running because there is NO ONE to oppose this left wing democrat. Obama's ideals and previous voting record are downright scary they are so liberal. SOMEONE has to oppose this guy and call him out on his stance on the issues. He shouldn't be able to just walk into office unopposed.

In spite of what heck this state is in, there are still moral people who live here and are tired of being governed by the ideals of one very democratic city...

By the way gometros, I didn't know Bin Laden lived in my state, let alone that he is running for office. Someone should let the armed forces know. :p

Excuse me Tinks, I live in Ill, I am a Democrat and I am aMoral person. Please do not paint everyone who votes a certain way as immoral. I happen to think Obama ( not Osama :p ) is a wonderful politician and, more importantly, a wonderful man. I know that Keyes called him out on late-term abortion (something this Dem opposes BTW) and sqwaked about him voting "no" on a ban. However, Obama made the quite reasonable statement that the bill had no provision for the life and health of the mother. Also, he pointed out that TWO Supreme Court Justices appointed by Ronald Reagan agreed with that position.

If I were a Republican, I would be ticked that the Election Committee decided there wasn't one person in the state who could oppose Obama. Also, if I had lived in NY at the time, I would have not voted for H. Clinton as I think carpet bagging is plain wrong no matter the party.

Just my .02

TINKS...........

Did you mean to imply in your post that Democrats don't have morals or did I misinterpert what you said?

Excuse me, I just left your state and found many moral people
there. I read several newspapers for several days and it looks
like most people are seeing Keyes run for Senate for what it is-
carpetbagging. The guy just moved into a walk up in a heavily
blue collar area that is mainly democratic. He is pandering and
playing some game other than straight up politics. Even jaded
old politicians are amazed at this move by the R party. You say
you are VOTING for him? OK, but it would make more sense to
write in your own name! You at least are familiar with local issues. This is about representation in the Senate of the United States!!!!! good grief!

I don't even have the heart to take any shots at Keye's over this. . . I'm sure his loss by 30+ points in Nov. will be all the humiliation he'll need to let him know this wasn't the best idea he could have come up with. ..

I would like to see any debates between these two though. . :)

I have to agree with wvrevy. This entire episode has been an utter fiasco and complete embarrassment. In 2000, Mr. Keyes alleged that Hillary Clinton was nothing more than a "carpetbagger", but now 4 years later it's OK to be a carpetbagger for the "right" reasons?

I voted for Jack Ryan in the primaries, but I will not vote for Alan Keyes in the election. I refuse to participate in some self-styled martyr syndrome that Mr. Keyes wants to pursue.

The comment from Tinks about moral people is so offensive.
