Political: Celebrities declare own war -- on Bush

What always gets me is when guys like Sean Penn go to war torn countries like Iraq to visit sick kids in hospitals. I always think "These kids don't have a clue who you are; nor do they care." They want to see doctors and people to help them, not so0me creepy american actor guy they don't know who is there for a publicity photo.
ITA!!! ::yes::

So... Why have both sides become so uncivil? I've not spoken to one person, either Republican or Democrat, that likes the nastiness. I assume someone must respond to the negative ads.

For the same reason that people will watch Jerry Springer - for some mudslinging and drama sell.

I don't usually take exception to anything you write, Amanda, but I disagree with the statement above. When this administration made their comments about either being with us or with them...when they make comments calling those that agree with the president un-American...when they question the patriotism of those that fought for this country while they were busy hiding out in the Alabama National Guard, they drew a line in the sand. THEY are the ones setting the negative tone, and those on the more liberal wing of the democratic party are responding in kind (and that's not Kerry and Edwards, either...think MoveOn).

Think about the day that John Edwards was announced as the VP nominee...The RNC came out with a dozen different attacks on Senator Edwards trying to paint him as an ultra-liberal ambulance chaser that couldn't care less about anything other than the all mighty dollar. That wasn't some ultra-conservative group...it was the RNC itself.

Yes, the Dems are fighting back, and it's about time. We've been getting attacked by the right wing since Clinton first took office, and the right can cry all it wants about the mean-old MoveOn-type PACs, but THEY are the ones that have set the tone for this debate, and it starts at the very top. When the VP - great intellectual that he is - can think of no better rejoinder to use on the floor the the United States senate than "F-off", and he's widely excused by the otherwise-morally-self-righteous members of his party (you know, the ones that want to increase FCC fines for vulgarity)....well, I'd contend that you need look no further to see the cause of the problem.

For 8 years, Repuglicans made a living off of whitewater and Vince Foster innuendo and Monica jokes...So it'll be a cold day in Texas before I begin feeling sorry for them that they are now getting some of their own medicine.

Sorry for the rant, but I felt that needed to be said :teeth:

I don't understand what the big deal is with people voicing what they believe in. BIG DEAL! What one celebrity says should not persuade you to vote for one side or the other. I mean I am new to the whole voting business, just turned 18 in December, this will be my first time voting in the fall, and I am going to vote for who I WANT to. What would the difference be if any of you had the chance to be on TV and voice your opinion on politics? Aren't adults suposed to be less able to be less influenced by celebrities? Like with the music artists, they have been signing/rapping about whatever they want for a long time. Has there been any reports saying that someone won a election, or make a political statement because of what someone said in a song? If it makes them money, then they are happy.

I think it is fine for celebrities to say what they want, and if people disagree, then it only hurts the celebrity.

O.K., I just gotta ask...do you really think the dems would have played nice if the rep. had? I don't thinkany of them know how to be decent, honest human beings...but I may be becoming jaded...

I am really interested in your opinion...not being sarcastic JIC it sounds that way!

Personally, the louder and the more people yelling about the
horrible scare tactics, lies,mysogenistic personalities,horrible
job conditions, war mongering, rob from the poor and give to
the rich mentality, arrogance, I've got mine ideology and
more things I just can't bear to think about - the better.
Yell it from the rooftops, tell everyone you know. If you are
a celebrity and can talk to many at once, do it and help unite
this force coming from inside the minds and hearts of many
true Americans who will elect men and women who care about
the common man and don't just use him for their games.
Sing all ye that sing. Speak, all ye that speak. Let the writers
write, the artists paint-sculpt-sing, the dancers dance. We all
have the same message and are of the same mind. Let's send
George W Bush back to Texas into the arms of Halliburton and
those who brung him!!!!!

 It's always fun to watch one side running for the garden hose to wash the mud off their hands before they start pointing fingers and accusing the "other side" of slinging mud. What's even funnier is when one side dares claim that they've never been anywhere near the mud, when the evidence is all over their clothes. "But mommy, I wasn't actually playing or throwing the mud. I was innocently standing on the sidelines and those horrible bullies threw all this nasty mud on me."

Neither side's hands are very clean. I'd like to propose a truckload of Lava soap for BOTH sides. Use 1/2 the soap on their hands and the other hand on their MOUTHS!

Honestly, I don't know....Politics before Clinton had gotten fairly harsh, and I don't really think it had been overly one side or the other that caused that. But I would contend that the extent to which things have gotten negative is almost entirely the fault of the right wing. Clinton was president for 8 years...8 years in which he was called a murderer, a draft dodger (which they've apparently now become ok with :hyper: , put on trial for purely political reasons, had it insinuated that he bombed military targets as a political distraction...any number of things. When the current administration decided to make it "un-Amurcan" to disagree with those in power....well, it just got to be too much, so a lot of people on the left have finally said "that's enough" and started to fight back against the Karl Roves of the right using their own tactics. The fact that the right is now continuously whining about it cracks me up, frankly :teeth:

Thanks WV...but you gotta cut that hyper smilie! He is just a migraine in the making!

I just hate the muddy commercials...hate my kids seeing them!

The big difference in the Whoopi Goldberg/Dennis Miller thing is this: Kerry referred to Goldberg and others as the "heart and soul of America."

Bush said nothing about Dennis Miller or Whoopi Goldberg.

A lot of people are sick of the mud slinging and are simply tuning out.

The big difference in the Whoopi Goldberg/Dennis Miller thing is this: Kerry referred to Goldberg and others as the "heart and soul of America."

Please do not tell me you are trying to say that when Kerry said this he was endorsing what Whoopi said. Do you happen to know exactly when Kerry said this? Frankly you make it sound like Whoopi made her statement and Kery jumped up and endorsed her as the heart and soul of America. Please ! For all you know these two things were said hours apart. Or were you there?

When the Dixie Chicks opened their concert tour here in Greenville, SC last year after Natalie Maines making her opinion known about President Bush, the locals here braced for the fall-out. They said no one would show up, a local radio station sponsored an alternative country/western concert, using your DC ticket as free admission..They set up police tape, called in the troops(police), and........nothing...a big, fat, nothing. Greenville was on the national news....nothing. It was a packed to overflowing crowd that had a great time.

Sadly, we had to sell our tickets because we had a trip to WDW planned. The local TV news scanned the want ads and called me to come over and interview me. (ha, my 15 minutes) I guess they were looking for someone who was selling because of a protest, but I still ended up on the evening news! And I got to say that I thought that Ms. Maines had every right to say what she did, that is what America is all about. And of course, people have a right NOT to listen to her music, too.

I sort of admire someone who has so much to lose to make a statement that could possibly end their career. That takes real conviction..

Does it take conviction or arrogance that your opinion means more than the average?

BTW, glad you could take the fluff out of the reporters! Serves them right.

I'm surprised that they actually wanted your story being that it wasn't what they were looking for. However, I am glad that you stuck up for Natalie. Since when are we not allowed to say what we want, this is a free country afterall!

Here's the original story from the Green Bay newspaper:
Newton, Miller Entertain at Rally
The salient quote is here:

And he [Miller] joked about the penchant for back-slapping and hugs in the Democratic ticket. "Those two cannot keep their hands off each other," he said. "Maybe they should use the bumper sticker 'Hey, get a room.'"

That's the "damaging" quote ? :rotfl: I've been referring to the president as a (insert VP's given name here) for quite a while...Didn't know it was quite so "damaging" :rotfl:

Thanks Revy for misunderstanding everything here. To explain, if Fox news doesn't report Miller's comments, its hypocrosy. If CNN doesn't report Miller's comments, its good journalism?

Who reads Green Bay's newspaper anyways? ;)

Exactly about Whoopi's quote... not so damaging is it? Why didn't they quote her? Why is Whoopi using old, old material? Why don't you sue her for using your copywrited material? Why did they mention it at all?

And by the way, I didn't take Miller's comments as a joke on gays. I took it as a joke on how much they touch each other. Lighten up. Most people would be uncomfortable with two persons touching each other inappropriatly in public.

So.... maybe the media took the comments appropriatly. The one that was a joke on people touching each other was ignored. The other that flat out called the President a 'bush' was mentioned.

Most people would be uncomfortable with two persons touching each other inappropriatly in public.

touching each other inappropriately????????

well, obviously, the media's subliminal messages have absolutely nothing to do with peoples' perceptions, right? what a farce !

It seems that Bush Bashing has become the latest ploy for washed up entertainers to get mention in the news.

Bush bashing is happening everywhere. Celebrities just happen to do it in public. I cannot tell you how many friends and family members, who voted for Bush last time, are completely fed up......and worse...afraid to say so in public. They will however be saying so with their private ballots.

Yep Bush bashing is everywhere! I also hear alot of negatives on Kerry. I am not ashamed to say I voted for Bush.

I really don't care what celebrities say. Their opinions mean nothing to me....I take it the way I take everything I see or hear about politics....with a grain of salt.

Unfortunately the way this race is going I don't want to vote for either candidate.
