An altercation in a Universal CityWalk dance club led to three people being arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer. Last week, Aaron Lyle Vogel, 25, was at the club with his girlfriend and her mother. Vogel said a man was hitting on his girlfriend, Marissa Shanahan, 23, so he got into a fight with him. The three left the club, after Universal security officers, William Cubano and Garley Parsons, had been called. The report stated that Vogel became "belligerent" when Cubano asked him to leave, and then ran at the officer and pushed him. Cubano and Parson held Vogel on the ground until the Orlando police arrived. Vogel was charged with battery on a security officer.

While Vogel was on the ground, Shanahan began punching Cubano in the head. Police arrived as a crowd began to form. Shanahan was told to put her hands behind her back, but she refused. According to OPD Cpl. Eduardo Bernal's report, "because of the crowd and hostility of those involved, I grabbed her left hand, identified myself as Orlando Police, and told her to put her hands behind her back. She aggressively pulled away from me and attempted to hit me with her right hand." He then "grabbed her left arm with both hands, pulled her away from the crowd and tried to pin her against a wall."

At this point, Shanahan's mother, Wanda Grace, 44, began hitting Bernal on his back and the back of his head. She was cuffed on the ground by another police officer and security officer. Grace was charged with battery on a law-enforcement officer.

Bernal then got Shanahan to the ground and cuffed her while she continued to try to hit him. Shanahan was charged with battery on a security officer, attempted battery on a law-enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.

Seriously? Because it is universal's fault they let in guests that cased a ruckus?

This is one of the primary reasons Disney closed Pleasure Island. The local "guests" were getting too hard to control and PI was taking on a repetition that was causing Disney World guests to not go there anymore. We stopped going for that reason...still have PI tickets that were never used...

I do hope the battery charges stick.

I was going to say this very thing. The thugs were moving in.

I hadn't heard that there was concerns at PI...other than the usual occasional drunken stupidity.

This thing at universal boils down to just that: drunken stupidity.
Perhaps Disney factored that in to PI... But that's an excuse as well. I think it boiled down to not enough cash coming in... And the replacement ( take 2) will equal some cash with less overhead.
Profit, baby!

We read that same thing all the way up here in New England.

However in fairness you can't condemn all of city walk for a few drunks. Seems Uni security and the police settled the matter. Hopefully that will be the end it.

The new DTD looks to still have some clubs, and a lot more interesting shops and restaurants. Looking for a great improvement in night entertainment and food. Hoping this is another sign Igor's book keepers are no longer pulling the strings and the Disney imaginers are in charge again.

Nothing wrong with profit for City Walk and DTD!

AKK

Not sure if this is in response to my sarcasm. If so, let me explain my attempt at hilarity

In the state of Florida, just about every major establishment participates in the Responsible Vendor program (Florida Statute 561.705), INCLUDING Disney and Universal. In order to qualify to as a "Responsible Vendor," all staff must complete regular training through the State. Part of this training is recognizing intoxicated patrons, reading body language, interacting with intoxicated patrons, etc.

Having worked security in Night Clubs and Concert Venues for the last six and a half years (various night clubs in the Washington DC area, House of Blues at DTD for the last three years), I can say that if a "ruckus" breaks out on your property of that proportion, its your fault. With years of training and experience, you learn how to read people and predict their behavior. You realize that being proactive prevents unneeded violence and can preserve guest safety, even if they make poor decisions.

Vogel said a man was hitting on his girlfriend, Marissa Shanahan, 23, so he got into a fight with him.

The author won't be winning a Pulitzer anytime soon, a lot of information was left out. This situation could have prevented, I can't tell you how many times stepping in and just saying "hey, I noticed you two were starting to get a little heated, is everything okay?" has diffused a situation. Also, you have four people involved: Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Mother, and other man. Not to mention the possibility of others with them. When approaching what could be a hostile environment, you have to make sure you have sufficient back-up. Relying on the police, much less OPD (whose over-aggresion has been broadcasted on National News on more than one occasion) means you are in way over your head and shouldn't approach.

I wasn't here for the old PI days, but from what I've gathered from co-workers is that while PI was open, there were many issues with the clubs. Disney had special security (different uniforms, blue military-style BDU pants and Grey Polos) to monitor the area. They were empowered to go hands-on (get physical if necessary) with unruly guests. Then end result was the trouble and detriment to the Disney Brand not being worth the profit.

Only goes to show that there are idiots everywhere. Hey, I know....Let's get in a fight and when the police show up we'll just ignore them. 1 part ignorance, 10 parts alcohol and shake.

And to the poster that used the opportunity to take a shot at Universal.....Really? It's Universal's fault that an individual makes a dumb decision? As I stated at the top.....Idiots everywhere and no way to determine when they will behave as such.

To reiterate...again...

The overall situation could have been prevented. In my opinion (subject to criticism, just like everyone else's), it's not Universal's fault one of their guests made a bad decision, its their fault it turned into a brawl.

From what I read in the above "article", which is all anyone has as a basis for the incident, its appears there wasn't ample staffing at the venue. From my experience and training, two security guards cannot contain a fight between 3 people. I also think OPD could have approached the scene in a better way(again, my opinion).

And all this came from an Anchorman quip...:confused3

Hence two person fight, two Universal security

Universal Security still okay

According to OPD Cpl. Don't see what OPD did wrong.

True, one thing I could've also closed it (at least in my mind) is the whole "one-night stand" thing. Can you just imagine how awkward it would be if you went to Disney, came home with a complete stranger, hoped for a relationship but it never worked. I doubt any company would wan't to be associated with that. Makes me wonder if Universal might follow suit, only problem is locals love it
About the "You stay classy" comment, I think he was mentioning how that happened. He wasn't blaming anyone, he was joking about how classy it was

...I doubt any company would want to be associated with that. Makes me wonder if Universal might follow suit, ...

Different company, different background, different vision. Disney is based on wholesome movies for kids that has expanded to also include adults who are kids at heart. Universal does not have that "baggage" they don't have to worry about damaging that "feel good" opinion...they never had it. So i suspect Universal will keep it alive as long as they are making money. On the other hand, I do think Disney would walk away from a money maker if they felt it could hurt their reputation.

I don't see how this became a brawl. It sounds like two guys were starting to fight and security asked them to leave. Then there was more trouble and the police were called. After that the group as a whole turned on the police.

I've seen things blow up suddenly even when alcohol wasn't involved. This doesn't seem to be a common occurrence or at least I haven't seen much of this.

Disney has soft porn distribution baggage. The company is not all pixie dust and Mickey Mouse.
