DD8 has what I thought were spider bites. (I have killed a few spiders lately and thought one must have gotten into her bed.) The school nurse thinks she has poison oak or sumac. I have been giving her benadryl (liquid) and putting Ivarest on the rash, but she is still very uncomfortable. Does anybody have any good remedies (either from the store or homemade) that take away the itch and work fast?

I used benadryl spray extra strength on my kids for posion ivy this summer it worked great!!I got it at walmart, and i have used alveeno cream and bath stuff too .
I hope she feels better!

nothing helped mine (poison oak) except time. i still have a scar from it.

Thanks, mrsmom, I'll give that a try!

caitycaity, I was afraid of that. The school nurse told me that she had a case of poison oak this summer that lasted three weeks.

Benadryl will help with the itching and such, but you will need a cortisone cream to reduce the inflammation and clear the skin up. There is no truth to the rumor that scratching the area will spead it, unless the resin that caused the allergic reaction is still present on the skin. Highly unlikely unless contact just occurred. There may be topical items to apply which will alleviate the itching, but the reaction will have to run its course. Good luck .

If it is especially bad, go to the doctor. They can prescribe oral steriods which will stop the reaction in its tracks.

what about calymine (sp?) lotion? i remember my mother using it on us when we were little. and it comes in clear now so you dont have to be pink! it is supposed to relieve the itch.

{{HUGS}} to your DD! hope she feels better soon!

oh...i have heard that oatmeal baths help with the itching too!

My son reacts very strongly to poison ivy! Once when he had a bad case the pharmacist suggested I buy Tecnu. I think that is the way you spell it. It comes in a bottle and it's like liquid soap. He said to ignore the directions which say to wash it off. Just dab some on and let it dry. It helps DS more than anything else we've tried.
