Can rented dvc points be used on accomidations not listed on the points charts? If so how would that work?

ie. Animal kingdom lodge room with bunks rather than the studio or one bedroom listed in the points schedule.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks
Kelly

As far as I know there are no plans to include any DVC accomodations with bunks beds in AKV. Sorry.

Are you asking if a point reservation can be made at regular lodge rooms? If that is the question, the answer is "no". The AKV villas do have 1 bedrooms that can sleep 5, so that might be an option for you. The beds would be a king in the master, a pull out queen in the living room, and a pull out twin sized chair bed in the living room as well.

DVC points cannot be used for any resort that has a DVC resort attached to it - like BC, BWI, WL, AKL, or any value resorts. There is a $95 fee for trading outside of DVC into a non-DVC resort at WDW.

DVC points may be used at all Deluxe and moderate resorts (except those with an associated DVC resort (like BWI, BC and now AKL) and at FW. It is possible to rent accommodations at other WDW resorts from a DVC member using their points, but it would be wise to compare the rate available directly thru CRO before commiting to such a rental since points needed for these options is much higher than staying at a DVC resort and probably higher than a direct cash reservation thru Disney.

While it's possible, there may not be any savings at all.

Enjoy!

Doc, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it also true that if you use points to stay at a WDW hotel, you cannot purchase the dining plan for that stay? I thought I read somewhere that you can only purchase the DDP when staying on points at a DVC resort. Just something else to be aware of when contemplating using points outside of DVC.

You are correct.

If DVC members stay at a non-DVC resort on points, they cannot purchase the DDP.

Just for comparison, suppose you wanted to stay in a DVC villa at the Beach Club, in September. A Studio is the closest thing DVC has to a standard hotel room. You want to stay for 10 nights. The total number of points would be 140, or an average of 14 pts/night.

Instead, staying those same 10 days at Yacht Club (practically the same as BC) and got a standard view, it would be 406 points, or an average of almost 41 pts/night.

If you rent points for $10 each, and pay the $95 processing fee, your total Yacht Club reservation will run you $4155.00 which averages to $415.50/night. That's equivalent to paying $372.65/night plus tax. (There's no tax if you use points)

If you wanted a YC water/pool view, it would be another 70 points (or $700 at $10/point rental), averaging another $70/night for a total of $485.50/night (tax included) for that Yacht Club, Water View hotel room, in September, which by the way, is low season.

Want to rent points for a Yacht Club hotel room, water view, between Dec 20th and Dec 31st, and pay $10/point rental, then 10 days will run you 708 points. Or $7175.00 total (Avg $717.50/night).

Going back to our September 10 day reservation, if you rent points at $10/point, it'll cost you this amount for the lowest class hotel room in these resorts:

Contemporary: $345.50/night
Grand floridian: $473.50/night
Polynesian: $427.50/night
Carribean Beach: $195.50/night
Coronado Springs: $195.50/night
Port Orleans: $195.50/night

Remember, the above are all in Low Season. Regular season runs about 11% higher, Peak Season about 27% more, and Holiday season about 44% more. (These are based on Contemporary resort. Percentages for other resorts will vary.)

If you do not get a weekend but just get a 5-day weekday rate, the average number of points/night is less, but the $95 processing fee has more of an impact. Thus in our original example, 5 nights at BCV would be 60 points, or 12 pts/night. Those same 5 nights at the contemporary would be 145 points, or $1450.00 plus $95 for a total of $1545.00 which averages out to $309/night.

If instead you got those 5 nights at BCV and at $10/point, it would cost you $120/night. (At OKW $80/night, at SSR $110/night, at VWL $120/night, at BWV standard view $90/night, and preferred view $120/night.

Using points at non-DVC resorts is not the best usage.

Just FYI
