Points Trade Questions

Hi

We are VGC home members and would like to consider "trading ??" points with someone that has * as there home for the 11 month reservations.

What are the disadvantages to doing a trade there are not many posts for trades - we are not in it for $$ we just want a fun (details removed) so it would be points for points -
is this possible?
Its done as a one time transfer correct?
Trust of the other person?
Does trading happen much and when is the best time to post this request ...getting pushed several pages doesnt help people see the request...thoughts?

Thanks for your time - we are 1 year into DVC so this would be a brand new adventure if it happens.

Disney doesn't want you to trade points. If they did, they wouldn't restrict the process. You are only allowed one transfer per year so if you transfer in, you can't transfer out.

A word of caution. We transfered points to ourselves and DVC screwed the transaction up so badly that it took a couple of weeks to fix and hours of our time.

ok so out of pure ignorance I am missing the point for the option to rent or trade points?

Or is this just an honor system where you find another family and they book their point for you and you for them? Not sure if you can even do that...book your points under a different name.

It's rarely done for several reasons. As pointed out, transfers are problematic due to restrictions. Finding the right person who wants to match you in reverse and is comfortable with the process is very difficult. Likely the best approach to do this is for each party to make a reservation on their account for the other party. Even better would be to look at other options including for you to rent out your points and rent what you want (or pay for points for transfer). You could always try at 7 months out and wait list if need be. Then there's cash member discount rooms. And about any combo of these approaches you can think of.

be aware that renting is less of an issue than transferring pts. disney will come after you if they see you as a "commercial renter" (with 20 or so rentals per year) but will only allow 1 transfer per year, either in or out but not both. so transferring pts out to another owner and having them transfer pts to you in the same UY is simply not an option.

every rental or reservation made for friends and family members are made in the name of the person travelling. the DVC owner still owns the reservation but they do make the reservation in another name.

and yes, the honor system is a bit unnerving when you make a reservation for an owner travelling in sept and they promise to make one for you for december...if there's no reservation for you in december, what are you going to do?

easier to just rent out your pts and use the cash to rent from another owner...
