Sorry if this is out there, I am new to the Disboards. What is the current thinking of the DVC Resort expiration dates? Will you totally lose your investment, will there be a new reduced extension fee? Has Disney said specifically what will happen? Thanks.

Disney will do what makes them the most money. Could be an extension, could be a new resort or just new contracts for new buyers. It's a business.

We asked this question back in 1993 while we standing at OKW getting ready to buy.

Saleswoman gave us the best answer I've heard so far. She said, by then, Disney could take this property and make a spaceport for rides to the moon.

DVC is not an investment, it is basically a lease. The lease ends on a set date. It's possible there will be offers to extend the lease but there is no guarantee.

as others have said, there is no investment. it's a prepaid lease that expires at a certain point.

on feb 1, 2042, i won't own a real estate interest in OKW. i also won't owe any further fees on that real estate interest.

that's how i like it. (other timeshare owners have found that owning a fractional interest in a 60+ year old building isn't really worth that much...as most prefer to stay in newer, nicer places. it's hard to sell some timeshares for $1 on ebay...some owners pay thousands to get away from the perpetual maintenance fees. DVC takes some of that stress away.)

DVC generously offered me the chance to extend my contract to 2057 for $25 per pt. ($15 per pt if i acted quickly.)

these days, i can get an OKW resale with pts to use right now for $50 per pt or so. that seems like a much better deal than paying even $15 per pt for pts that don't start coming until 2042...

It's unknown what will happen, but if you want an example of what could happen, look at what Disney is doing right now with OKW extended contracts. I would try to monitor how well it works, because that might give you some insight into whether or not they will repeat that process or not. My thinking is that although Disney could let all the contracts expire and resell them as new, they are going to have a hard time selling a "used" resort as new.

DVC gave OKW owners a chance to extend our contracts a number of years ago, I chose not to, first I didn't think I would be using it at that point and it seem like a good use of my money,

Why spend the money on something so far in the future, taking that money and buying points at other "newer" DVC resorts with later expiration dates seems like a much better choice, MORE VACATIONS NOW"

Very insightful thanks for the response.
